There is a way of thinking that if you always expect the worse, then anything that happens must be better.
Walsall are failing and if Notts can hit a bit of a run, like Port Vale, then there is a chance. We're in a better position, than we've been for years. Notts just need to ignore other clubs' form and go for it.
The thing is we never seem to go for it. Even when we are losing with minutes to go, we still play as though there is 90 minutes still to play. We dont have anyone in the team prepared to bust a gut to get us back into it.. They always say a dog owner looks like his dog. In our case the team reflect Maynard...
We have scored 13 goals in the last 15 mins of games - which is in the top part of the league, so to suggest we whimper in the last part of games is a lie really and probably just based off the pretty limp effort last weekend.
Its fair to say that SM has made us more calm / balanced / 'safe' than the basket case on the pitch gung ho team we were last season but that has been to our benefit in the most part. Theres only really Salford and Wimbledon away where weve been comfortably beaten.
The frustration for most fans is that weve been edged out by the odd goal in some of the high profile games against top 7 teams, (Port Vale Twice, Walsall twice). But we are still sat in a great position, just need to focus on being on the right side of those games against Bradford and Doncaster (of whom weve already got 4 points against) and see where we end up.
Were you at FGR last season, the game was into the last minute of added time, we were losing 1-0. We had a corner, and instead of trying to get a last second equaliser we passed it back. The ref blew the whistle. And that is the attitude that we still have, unless you are watching a different game to me...
It is seriously frustrating when Notts are like that. It's not just been under Maynard though - it seems to have been like it for years. I watched McGoldrick's youtube interview where he says football is now full of robot players, coached by robot coaches. The passion and individual brilliance is being coached out of players at a young age and being replaced with 'how much they run' and 'how fit can they be made'.
I've been saying it for years. I coached kids teams in NZ for a while and we had quite a lot of success. I was given free rein and we played 4-4-2 and played all our fancy stuff in the opponents half - the ball was always on the ground. Basic common sense. Defenders job was to stop the opposition and get the ball as fast as possible to those that could do something with it.
I was asked to coach the Cambridge U11 year olds first team, when they became a 'Federation' team. My first team had won the league and cup the previous year - so I thought it was more of the same. Kids football is quite well organised in NZ and the Federation is a precursor to playing in a National League. I accepted, and then the club gave me a 300 page manual on how to coach the kids - supplied by the NZ Football Federation. It was virtually all about getting players to build from the back and ensuring that all players from the goalkeeper forwards, touched the ball and could 'build from the back'. I handed the book back and said thanks but no thanks - It would be like watching Notts. That was the end of my coaching.
A dog owner looks like his dog? We've always had Basset Hounds.
