Hamshaw was here throughout Warne's tenure so he'll already have an inside track on how the club works. Maybe he'd like to see a few changes before he commits full time?

We've seen already that Hamshaw will adopt a hard working, bodies on the line style of play that echoes the Warne playbook. But what needs to change is the small squad. I've said it before so often that people are sick of hearing it, but you can't play like that over a full season with a small squad. But what we don't know for sure is, was the issue Warne not wanting to manage a bigger squad or Tony not wanting to spend? I have no idea! But two men who definitely will know are Hamshaw and Warrington. If the issue was Tony not wanting to spend, maybe Hamshaw is reluctant to sign on long term until he knows he won't have such tight constraints?

Also of interest in Hamshaws post match comments at Bolton was when he talked about the academy. he said it's very important and has produced success in the past. He's right, it has, but not in the numbers we would want. Hamshaw has experience working with youth, maybe he really wants to push the academy and investing in home grown talent.

He's an intelligent man who knows the club inside out. So he will know exactly what will need to change, within reason, to give him a chance of doing the job
