First impressions? I don’t really know what all the fuss is about. No one takes much notice of the football tables in September and it’s equally unwise to make too much of local election results ten months into a five year GE term.
What’s actually happened? A Labour candidate in Cheshire, who’s predecessor was completely discredited by his stupid behaviour, has been very, very narrowly defeated by a former Tory who has moved to Reform. Lincolnshire, solid Tory ground, has elected another opportunist former Tory who has taken up with Reform to become Mayor.
Elsewhere it seems like a good night for Reform, an awful night for the Tories and a bad night for Labour but it wasn’t, imo, entirely unexpected.
Labour have had to do some unpopular things and I don’t necessarily agree with all of them. At the moment they aren’t popular but they do have a huge majority and at least another two years before they need to show real evidence of turning things around in a better direction.
We’ll see if Farage actually has anything to offer the country rather than his own well being. Personally I doubt it, but the thing to watch, again imo, is the changing relationship between the Tories and Reform. ‘New political landscape’? Heard it all before.
