The easiest MOM decision of all today. I would rate George Abbott 8.5, at least two points above anyone else. He was the only one who looked up for the fight, which is very worrying because he won't be here next season
A lot of the balls he receives are with his back to goal and his close control of those types of ball is not the best. Isn't he better running on to through balls? Is it our style of play that doesn't suit him?
Crosses into the box for him to get on the end of were poor again today, catching practice for their keeper.
Bass - 7 - Couple of brilliant saves in the second half to prevent things getting worse.
McDonald - 6 - Solid enough player but shouldnt be starting RCB over Macari at home as isnt comfortable on the ball.
Platt - 5 - After being brilliantly consistent all season, seems to have had a drop-off in form at the worst time and the same defensive frailties we saw last season are starting to hit us again.
Bedeau - 5 - See Platt above.
Gordon - 6.5 - Seems to be the new scapegoat for fans and manager. Made the best of a number of situations first half where he received the ball with two players close to him and still got a good ball in. Mustve been half a dozen decent crosses first half including one Whitaker shouldve scored from. Well nullified second half when their manager saw he was our biggest threat, then predictably hooked early.
Abbott - 8 - MOTM by a long way again. It is embarrassing how far above the rest him and McGoldrick are, and massively concerning for next season.
Palmer - 6.5 - Another unfairly scapegoated imo. Has done what hes always done for us, retains the ball well, keeps things ticking over, wins tackles/headers when required. It isnt his job/game to be running box to box and scoring goals, nor was it when he was being voted our Player of the Season.
Jones - 4 - Loses two points for bottling a tackle that was 80/20 in his favour that resulted in a goal. Embarrassing for a footballer at any level to be doing that, particularly as he then feigned injury initially. A couple of nice crosses from the left before Maynard reverted to the inverted wing back experiment to make us even blunter going forward.
Grant - 4 - Completely anonymous, like the vast majority of his games for us. We need so much more from someone in his position. Is symptomatic of the wider problem/mentality as were playing an attacking midfielder based primarily on how well he presses off the ball.
Whitaker - 5 - Missed a header just after their first goal which probably wouldve changed the game as it went on. Tried hard otherwise but like Grant lacks the quality/creativity we need from someone being played in that position.
Jatta - 5 - Isnt the same player when McGoldricks not playing. Very isolated but always seemed to be in the wrong place to get on the end of any of the multitude crosses that landed in the box first half, and struggles to hold the ball up. A really poor afternoon despite the late consolation.
Subs - 5 - None of them positively impacted nor made a real claim to be starting next weekends game. Good to see Austin back but him and Edwards as the attacking changes hardly screams promotion. Appreciate McGoldrick was injured but where was Traore?
Maynard - Same as pretty much every home game under him. Some nice bits of play, goal against the run of play for the opposition. Game over. Outthought after the break and they see it out with ease. Subs made us significantly worse. He is by far our biggest weakness going into the playoffs. Just cant wait for this experiment to be done with, whichever league we end up in.
Bass 6: kicking appalling early doors but a quality 1 on 1 saved 2nd half kept the score down
Bedeau 5: out muscled and out manoeuvred by Street most game. He continued to get forward and never hid
Platt 4.5: his worst performance in a Notts shirt. Man handled and out fought by Street. Looks like he's in need of a rest
Macdonald: 5 Street played the other side so not tested like the other two, but he's so limited on the ball he's a liability in the system
Gordon 6: He's genuinely quick and adds pace. Final ball is so often a let down. Not convinced he's a good match for the system, but needs must
Jones: 5 not the same player as last season. Lacking in confidence with the ball and lacking in fight without it
Abbott: 8 best Notts player by some distance, we'll miss him massively next season
Palmer: 6.5 neat and tidy, keeps the ball moving side to side, but neither breaks up play enough not offers enough going forward. Is a different player without Crowley next to him
Grant: 6.5 worked hard, pressed well and made his tackles. There's a player in there somewhere, but he's not enough of an attacking threat to be playing as a 10 in this system
Whittaker: 4 lost his man with lazy defending for the goal. Didn't put himself about a enough or offered enough going forward. Again, there's a player in there but he's too much of a luxury to be consistently effective for this version of Notts. May mature into an effective football league attacking midfielder, although unlikely to be with us.
Jatta: 5 too easily manhandled by strong centre halves. If our kicking philosophy is to hit Jatta long he has to be much stronger. Would have scored less but he scored.
Subs:
Macari: 6.5 not perfect but he energy and willing to overlap changed the effectiveness of our right hand side. Surely has to start the playoffs
Edwards: 7 his energy, organisation, and communication was a plus second half despite a sloppy pass here or there
Austin: 7.5 got an assist and looked lively. Will be a big plus to have back in the playoffs
Hinchy: 5 doesn't offer much with or without the ball. Surely won't be around next season
Jarvis: 5.5 not his day. Dispossessed too easily on the dribble, but has proven he can be an asset going forward
Maynard 5.5
Easy to blame the coach after such a game, but if we're being honest is a team featuring Whittaker, Palmer, Grant, Gordon and MacDonald really good enough to achieve automatic promotion from league 2? I don't think so. Let's judge him when he has a better team at his disposal
