Anniversary more or less.
Alex Revell's goal at Wembley.
Just watched it again, got goosebumps snd started roaring like a baby.
No other moment has that impact
Tell me I am wrong.
Sat right behind it on the day.
And Orient are wearing a similar kit today to acknowledge the fact.
It?s got to be beating a very strong Arsenal at home, Gwyther & Finney ran them ragged. Man Utd away in the cup 0-0. Keith Pring hitting the post twice.
I know it's in the dim and distant past but beating two First Division (Premiership) teams - Leicester City and Bolton Wanderers, both away games - to reach the final of the first League Cup competition in 1961 ranks up there for me. Winning the first (home) leg of the Final 2-0, and losing the second 3-0 to a very strong Aston Villa side, is also part of that legend.
OK the First Division clubs may not have taken the competition too seriously at first but they fielded strong sides. (Banks in goal for Leicester, Peter McParland and Derek Dougan, Northern Ireland Internationals, in the Villa side. Nat Lofthouse was in the Bolton team at the time but was out injured.)
A Graham Leggat lob into the net from the halfway line; Jim Furnell's incredible saves; Roy Ironside keeping a clean sheet with a broken finger saving a shot that trapped his hand against the bar; every single thing that Dave Watson ever did; Emlyn's 50-yard change as player-manager to score as he took us from div 2 relegation to the edge of promotion; Houghton's incredible passes; Towner's mesmerising dribbles; the speed of Barry Lyons; the sheer heart of Trevor Swift...
But the Revs goal, for occasion, impact and everything else, probably makes a.miserable Millers life worthwhile 🤣🤣🤣
I can't imagine the play-off final against Orient will ever be surpassed as the greatest Millers' moment in my lifetime. However, from my very young days at Millmoor, the FA Cup victory against Wolves in Jan 68 takes some beating. 1-0 up very early on and up against the likes of Dougan, Flowers and Knowles; the remaining 75 minutes of the game seemed to take days to complete. Wolves were in League One and we were well adrift at the bottom of Div 2 with a certain Mr Docherty in charge. The kind of stuff that imprints RUFC in your blood and gives you the resilience to keep the faith throughout seasons such as the last one!
