A lot of it is down to ‘celebrity culture’, I’m sure that a lot of these people don’t do their charity work just to get some reward, but a knighthood for Beckham? Absurd. Also, gongs for presenting the frightful Strictly Come Dancing and such like, ridiculous. I know a couple who dedicated most of their lives to caring for two severely disabled children (not their own), far more deserving than presenting TV programmes. I recently played in a band to entertain the staff and volunteers at a day care hospice, it is quite humbling to see the dedication that these people have in caring for those in need; there are obviously many such people up and down the land. I just think that the honours system seems somewhat disrespectful to such people. Time to stop these awards to celebrities.
