On Balance. For reference Al is relaying a tongue in cheek response from me to Matt who felt I was being sarcastic when I was just trying to have a laugh. I felt this was very apparent. He apparently did not.
I tried again but have no idea what he felt about being told to fk off along with Boingy in the event the apparently humour free Boingy had stolen his login details. That too was meant to be a joke as well Matt. Honestly 😃.
Mason is not the answer- said it from day 1 - slow build up , players out of position .
I don't think he has the nous or the courage to go for wins -
The championship is so different from the premier league and that is all he knows..
Let's see what the next team selection is but I don't think he is brave enough to go for a win
Personally, I think it is too early to write Mason off yet but am in complete agreement that we move the ball far too slowly going forward and that changes need to be made to the starting XI. Leicester will be another hard game but would like to see Taylor at LB to allow Styles to play in midfield, Maja in alongside Heggabo and, at the very least, Mikey ahead of Wallace. That way we should at least provide more of an attacking threat and greater energy. As you say, we shall see
Hang on a second. Before he stepped in the building you said he was 100% going to fail. Then we win a few and you say you were wrong and he is the answer. Now we lose away to top of the league and he is not the answer again .
We all predicted a mid table finish and we are 7th.
He deserves criticism for last match, but not that much. Of the two goals we conceded one was an individual defensive error and the other a brilliant goal. Nothing he did, setup-wise caused those goals.
Did we attack well enough, no. Could it have been a bit more attacking, yes. But dont forget Boro hadnt even conceded a goal at home and if Price scores his header its a draw. The margins are that fine.
baggiematt is absolutely right to criticise my flip flopping over Mason . So need to come to a conclusion .
Mason is NOT the man - the early wins will be seen as false dawns.
His premier league only experience is a drawback as the premiership style does not work in the championship.
Add to that he selects players out of position, allows slow from the back build up and imho does not have the courage to go for wins but seems to have 1-0 mindset- 1 goal isn't enough and attack is the best form of defence .
So after baggiematt justified criticism of my flip-flopping I am sticking with my view Mason is not the man , no play offs ,bottom of top half . If this is acceptable in terms of a longer term project that's one thing but let's temper our ambition accordingly
For me I won?t judge Mason until about 12 games in. I will add though - starting Wallace, Molumby and Mowatt won?t work and it?s not going forwards. I would like to see Collyer start and Gilchrist given an opportunity. Junior will provide pace on the wing which Jed does not have.
Will he make changes? I don?t feel he will apart from bring back Mikey due knowing he got it wrong at Boro!
Lose to Leicester without changes patience will start to erode. You can?t keep saying we had possession - we had chances - it was moments that dictated the game. This means jack s hit. Goals win games!
Glad to see you still posting Al!
We of all teams should know that possession isn't everything. When we were in the Premiership and winning some games, how many of those did we have little over 20% possession in and still manage to snatch a win through a rare set piece? (if only we were as good at converting corners now 😀
Mason has spoken earlier about getting the defence sorted first and to be fair, the acquisition of Phillips and Mepham has improved it and, defensively at least, Campbell is better than Furlong. Our problem remains-as many see it-our lack of goals and this is particularly hampered by over slow build ups in our attacking play and lack of creativity.
Like many, I believe that we do have players within the squad that can improve this but agree with you that Mason is over-cautious and whilst we may well see Mikey start on Fri, I would be (very pleasantly!) surprised if he actually played Taylor at LB to allow Styles to play in place of Mowatt or Molumby for example or at least started Maja alongside Heggabo. Collyer I can see making an appearance as a sub and possibly Iling Junior but I think a lot of the changes we would like to see will be slow in coming.
His selection on Friday will be interesting but if he doesn't make more of the changes many would like to see but we continue to lose or draw games that we should have got results from then, however "well" we played and regardless of possession and stats, patience will wear thin. My personal belief is that Mason, despite his inherent caution, will not allow us to get to this stage. Hope I am not proved wrong!
