I agree with you that Starmer and his supporters will try and block any route that might allow him to stand but then Burnham has his own influential supporters within the party who could help overturn such objections. So much depends on Burnham himself and his own ambitions. I get the feeling that he is weighing up his chances of success before deciding whether to push himself for it.
By which I mean the top job, of course. He has eventually come out and announced his wish to stand as an MP but has also spoken about his wish to back the current government, not undermine it. Clearly, he has ability but Starmer won't be taking him at his word and will be worrying about the threat from Burnham's own ambitions.
