As Newcastle United prepares for a critical summer transfer window, the recruitment criteria have expanded. Beyond the obvious needs for pace, technical skill, and versatility, the club is hyper-focused on a 'missing' metric: Dressing Room Leadership.
Eddie Howe?s 'Leadership Group' was established in 2022 to distribute responsibility across the squad. While it was instrumental in the club?s recent 'mini-reset' following the tough loss to Brentford, the group is currently facing a sustainability crisis.
Former club captain Jamaal Lascelles moved to Leicester in January, leaving a vacancy in the group that won't be filled until summer. Most of the current vocal leaders are also in the twilight of their careers:
Kieran Trippier: 35 (Final year of contract)
Dan Burn: 33
Nick Pope: 33
Jacob Murphy: 31
Bruno Guimar?es (28) is the only core leader in his prime, but he leads through emotional tempo and on-field action rather than the traditional vocal organising seen from Trippier or Burn.
Chris Waugh's sources within the club have expressed concern that the younger core?players like Sandro Tonali, Malick Thiaw, Tino Livramento, and Lewis Miley?are excellent professionals but "not great talkers." They are role models by example, but quiet on the pitch and in the dressing room.
The Athletic notes a striking link between the presence of these leaders and Newcastle?s performance.
2024-25 20.3 Starts 5th Place & Silverware
2025-26 18.5 Starts 11th currently Inconsistent/Mid-table pressure
When injuries stretch the squad, and the vocal leaders (including Sch?r and Joelinton) are missing, the team?s "on-pitch brain" often becomes disjointed.
Newcastle?s recruitment policy generally targets players aged 24 and under. However, the club is now looking for a specific profile to balance this:
? Future Captains: Identifying players who, while young, show the psychological traits to become vocal leaders in 2?3 years.
📝 Strategic Flexibility: A willingness to sign players in their mid-twenties if they possess "fully-formed" leadership credentials to replace the aging influence of Trippier and the departed Lascelles.
🤔 Diligence on Character: Beyond scouting goals and assists, the club is performing deep "due diligence" on how potential signings behave in difficult moments.
The bottom line is that Newcastle doesn't just need better footballers to break back into the elite; they need a new generation of organisers and shouters. As the club evolves, the leadership group must be recast?not just to maintain standards, but to ensure that when things go wrong on the pitch, someone is there to 'pump up the volume.'

Interesting article and not entirely wrong to be honest.
I would say in the last few games Tonali has been looking a lot more vocally leader-esque and his post match interviews have also reflect that.
I do agree with the main thrust though that we need some more leaders who aren't at the end of the careers.
Cheers, Jammy, good article.
Something I'd never really considered.
My worry is that they'll all still be here next season which, in terms of experience, is great but, in terms of legs, leaves us sorely lacking. They're all Eddie's favourites so he'll not be keen to let them go meaning less opportunity to replace them.
I think you can guarentee that Burn, Murphy will be here.
I bloody hope Bruno is still here.
Tripps is only one that could well be 50/50 but it wouldn't surprise me at all.
