Arrived in Fuerteventura yesterday to find that petrol is a surprisingly reasonable 1.29-1.33 Euros per litre. Not sure why. Was expecting much worse. En route to Manchester Airport it was up to 1.59 GBP pl.

The Spanish government doesnt load up the fuel price with about ? 0.53 fuel duty per litre and then another 20% on top for VAT. So out of your ? 1.59p per litre, some 80p isnt impacted by the raw oil / product cost. In Spain the fuel duty is around E 0.36 per litre (? 0.31) and 21% for VAT.

So if we take the tax impact off, and incorporate the fact that the landed product cost is cheaper in Spain due to delivery costs, those price differentials are fairly logical with about half of the pump price in UK not being impacted by supply/demand volatility for the fiel

I think you've offered that answer before. Its all pretty straightforward economics, notwithstanding profiteering at the retail end of the chain

Thanks. Think, but don’t understand why, it may be more complex. Just been told that one garage in Ashbourne is selling at 179.9 today.
The price of petrol in mainland Spain today would appear to be around 165.5 Euros and yet here in the Canaries it seems to be holding at around 1.29-1.33.
I do remember two or three years ago the Spanish government intervened, just after the Russian invasion of Ukraine I think, so that the price drivers paid was significantly lower than the advertised forecourt price.
Can’t explain any of it better than you but certainly the price here today is significantly lower than the mainland.

Sorted. The Canaries are apparently included as part of a ‘Special Economic Zone’ which exempts then from certain taxes. So not as straightforward as first suggested but a pleasant surprise.

I think Swale’s only reference to skin colour was in lighthearted comment regarding Robert Jenrick’s observations about an area of Birmingham, so it’s a little unfair and inaccurate to accuse Swale of ‘profiling people by their appearance’.

In relation to Great Yarmouth he simply reminded us of your previous comments about the general effect of immigration on that town.

Oh jeez, so now your claiming that EU immigration has contributed to the decline of places like Great Yarmouth? Really, are you as ignorant of economics as well as demographics?

As it happens I live in a place where there are significant numbers of EU immigrants, the vast majority of whom make a positive contribution to the area. What they aren't doing is depriving "native" UK people of opportunities, housing or acess to services, what is an issue is the 14 years of austerity and udner ininvestment by the previous Tory government.

I realise your grasp on demographics isn't that good, but in Great Yarmouth there is a high number of older people, of the circa 5% that are white but of a non UK origin (which includes those who who have been born here) contribute to the areas economy, as they do where I live, because they work in addition to setting up and owning businesses that provide employment and far from contributing to the towns decline they actually keep it alive and the services that these older prejudiced white folk rely on.

It is rather embrassing to have to explain the reality of life to you. But I guess thats the result of xenophobia, prejudice and narrow minded thinking.

As a matter of fact you offered no evidence or facts to back up your erroneous general claim that immigration had a negative impact on the citizens of Great Yarmouth and specifically your observation about the decline of certain areas of the town, the reasons for which are well documented and have been happening over decades.

To then come back and try (but fail) to be clever and say you never mentioned colour or ethnicty amuses me, you didn't mention anything to back up your claim when I politely rebutted your assertion.

Its like having a debate with a 5 year old, though to be fair most 5 year olds I know are actually better.

You’re an odd one, Andy. You have these ‘tricks’. If I speak in support of Swale that’s bad and you end up ‘name calling’, just as you accuse others of doing and just as you have (again, with a variation on your ‘rear gunner’ theme) above. If anyone speaks in support of you - usually only GP now (politically speaking) since TTR has faded away - that’s all good.

If someone replies to you negatively you condemn them for trying to ‘have the last word’ etc, etc. So if someone argues with you, they’re wrong because they’re just ‘having the last word’ and if they don’t, well where does that put you?

Word of advice. It doesn’t work and is a bit daft. Most saw through it a long time ago.
Sometimes people agree, sometimes they don’t. Sometimes we’re right, sometimes we’re wrong. It’s all as simple as that really.

Unfortunately, as far as politics goes, your, at least tacit, support for MAGA, your regular stance against immigration and pro a ‘raise the colours’ mentality puts you at odds with most more often than not, imo.
