I have been thinking about this and ask the question, "Was the unjustifiable homicide perpetrated on George Floyd the consequence of individual racism by one rogue cop or institutional racism within the ranks of the US State and Federal police?"

If it's the latter the US is in BIG trouble, because the Trump administration have no inclination whatsoever to get to grips with it.

I am totally certain if a President of the greatest military power on earth can openly express prejudice, hate and bias based on race, we all have a problem.

I was just looking for confirmation that institutional racism within the ranks of the US State and Federal police is rampant, but in reality that's exactly what the BLM movement is all about. Thanks 59er!

Yes, however, the BLM movement is now wanting funding withdrawn from our own police force and, by their actions, they will try to provoke our police into action against them just to try to prove a point.
This is exactly why the Met Police and the Bristol Police acted with great restraint because BLM and all those who have now jumped on the bandwagon really wanted out police to react violently. Look how many cameras were around to catch the action!
Instead, there were very few arrests and those injured were those trying to keep law and order.

You can try to get rid of institutional racism, however, you can't control any one individual's thoughts. no matter what race or colour. Everybody is different and some will think for themselves and make up their own mind, however, there are many who will follow the herd and react like the rest of the herd. There is certainly no easy answer.

Heard today on the Welsh news that Colston's statue is to be recovered, repaired and placed in a museum alongside placards from the BLM
movement. This seems an eminently sensible solution. We had an Empire once and were proud of it,that is part of our history and you can't change that.We should learn from history but sadly that is not often the case.

I dug this one out of the archives. When we have a Prime Minister who can create sentences like this, what chance do we have to end racism in this country?

There are probably a lot more examples on Facebook BT which is why I am steering well clear of commenting on that forum. Just throwing punches does not however actually constitute a debate in my opinion and it is a proper debate we are all want to see and need. I was for example educated in Portsmouth and Nelson is in very many ways a hero. I accept however that he is also a flawed character in both his private and public life. Do we just topple Nelson’s column and say that is a sound historical judgement? I don’t like Boris Johnson but a lot of people voted for his party at the last election. How would you write about that say twenty years from now? I do not like Oliver Cromwell but his role in establishing the rule of Parliament was critical to this nation. Some sound and informed decisions will need to be reached not least on how we teach history in our schools but an atmosphere of witch hunts is not a good time for making those decisions. History teaches me that.

"Policing by consent" does not in my mind entitle unruly mobs to assault our police outwood. I read in the papers this morning of two officers being physically assaulted when on duty in London yesterday.

Our Prime Minister and Home Secretary are noticeable by their absence. We now have football fans and the far right thugs "guarding" our cenotaphs and statues from BLM thugs. The "Law and Order" party have gone AWOL and it is not good enough. Nowhere near.

I think someone in authority (!) needs to remind Joe Public either black or white that our police officers are citizens in uniforms and just like the rest of us, have families and homes to go to.

I have been looking back at some of the images from the protests. One is of a young man carrying a placard saying “the UK invented racism”. I am sorry for this boy because clearly our educational system has failed him. Failed him and countless others. We can do better. I should be aiming to do better.
