There's still all to play for but we have to score more goals. We've failed to score five times this season and not scored more than one in a league game since November.
I think this squad can score more goals but Ardley will have to jig the midfield to do it. I think Doyle is the problem. He plays well but like Boucaud, Aborah and Fotheringham before him he plays very deep, making him look good as the spare player happy to receive the ball but how many assists or killer passes to set things moving? I'd rather sacrifice a bit of posession, move the ball higher up the pitch and at a better tempo.
Or play 4-1-3-2 if we're going to do the holding midfielder. Thought under Martin Allen it was a really flexible and effective formation.
Either way, to get the best out of Wootton he needs a partner, to give RR and Reeves the chance to be creative they'd be better served with having more than just treble marked Wootton to aim at so two up front is going to have to happen. If Ardley is wise he'll do it now rather than waiting until It's too late desperately trying to play catch up.
Hartlepool summed us up. When we put Knowles on as a second striker we scored within minites, first half we created next to nothing playing one up.
It's a pity we squandered pre season playing the diamond which was terrible for us and didn't concentrate on how best to have a strong midfield but with two strikers.
