On the face of it, its disgusting that the tories have exempted this one group.

But take a look at the list of organised sports covered by this exemption, put it another way, I can't think of one outdoor sport that isn't on the list.

Another example of our pitiful media making a story where there isn't one, especially when it's not that difficult to find one worthy of their attention.
I don’t ‘get’ the idea of killing wildlife for ‘fun’, Ram...but beyond that I take your point. Bit like the singing of ‘Rule Britannia’ argument...another ‘story’ totally manufactured by the media regardless of the facts.

Having said that...some of the rules and some of what’s going on at the moment does seem to have been thought up and communicated by idiots.

Totally agree RA, I enjoy most sports, including shooting, but could not contemplate shooting a living animal. Although, I accept that many people's lively hoods depend on such pastimes.

Well to me it's just even more cronyism from Johnson Who owns grouse moors non other than the PMs staunch Brexiteer friend Sir/Lord Ian Botham

No objection to shooting for food...or even the rabbit that occasionally destroys my garden, and on the rare occasions when I’ve had a go at clay pigeon shooting it’s been immensely satisfying...but just going out and slaughtering huge numbers of pheasants/grouse etc...not for me.

P.S. Didn’t realise that, mista. Maybe changes perspective.

I think you've been sucked in by the media, Mista. They've given a list of many popular and also unheard-of sports of which grouse shooting was in a sub section along with paint balling. The media and a Labour minister have just picked up one.

Had they not given a comprehensive list, then they would have been accused of not being clear and the likes of munchetty would have asked what about underwater polo, which is on the list.

RA I'm into my nature certainly nothing against Botham who does a lot for charities . But he took it on his own to go right to the top at the BBC to try and get Chris Packham sacked because he named two game keepers who poisoned and shot raptors The two were later found guilty through visual evidence ( RSP filming them

Didn’t know that either, mista. Got a lot of time for Chris Packham...love ‘Springwatch’ etc and his book, ‘Fingers in the Sparkle Jar’ is excellent.
Botham’s cricketing exploits from forty or so years ago made him something of a hero but since then, imo, he’s become a bit of an arrogant sod. Not sure he’s as bright as he thinks he is either.

You’re an angler then. Did a bit myself when I was a kid...not much since, too impatient!
Got mixed feelings about it tbh. I think good - i.e. conscientious - anglers can actually really benefit nature and I’ve come across some very knowledgeable anglers, but...careless inconsiderate ones are a liability, leaving line, litter, lead and hooks all over the place.

    Blimey...we’ve only gone and scored!

Lost all respect for Botham, for me he's an arse and the fact that he has raised money for charity doesn't alter that fact. He has attacked both Packham and the RSPB with lies and falsehoods and generally talks crap.

Its odd that Grouse Shooting and Shooting generally gained exemptions but I don't see it as much of an issue. The issue with grouse Shooting is firstly game keepers kill hundreds of thousands of so called vermin legally, plus thousands of other wildlife as collateral damage. The persecution of birds of Prey is endemic amongst the Grouse Fraternity, despite the fact that its been illegal to harm a bir dof prey for over 50 years, Goshawks, Buzzards, Peregrines and especially Hen harriers are regularly found shot or poisoned on or near Grouse Moors, at least 40 plus hen harriers have gone missing in suspicious circumstances.

Last year a saw a rare prosecution of a Keeper for killing Short eared Owls, add to that the burning of heather, which denudes and drys out peat and has shown to not only release carbon into the atmosphere but also increase the flood risk for towns below the moors.

In short its a barbaric sport for the rich that ought to be banned asap.

Nothing against shooting for the pot, or where required pest control (crops etc.) but grouse and pheasant shooting are both ecologically unsound and rely on the slaughter of wildlife to exist.
