Mcilvanney was certainly a great sports writer, some of his stuff on boxing was as good sports journalism as you will ever get, he was a great presenter too
Archer's best work was when he was writing for the Herald. He left the Herald to go to the Daily Express and I felt he was never the same. He did presenting on STV but to be honest I never really watched him that much as I never felt he looked comfortable in the role.

McIlvany is streets ahead of all mentioned above. Get him to write about tiddlywinks and he would have you in the palm of his hand. His turn of phrase captures the essence of a situation in simple terms

There does appear to be some needle from the other presenters as they rise to his bait. Willie Miller comes across as having no time for Young on anything

Ive just been reading some of his articles and it has to be said reading them made me feel more intelligent than I am, his insight is so persuasive and that must be what makes a good journalist great.

I noticed it was said he is the only sports journalist in uk ever to win journalist of the year, I would presume that must be still the case.

The last really great sports article I read was espn on Messi which was superb, not sure who it was that wrote it, will see if I can find it now

Didn't the late Ian Wooldridge also win it?
