Thread: Scotland 74 by Richard Gordon

    Scotland 74 by Richard Gordon

Just had a brief word with the author and I will be doing a review of his book soon (hopefully tomorrow) that looks at Scotland's World Cup in 74. I remember the feeling of disappointment when we went out once again but this time unbeaten. All the team buses were paraded ahead of the final and I seem to remember Scotland's bus getting the biggest cheer of the day. Perhaps the rosy glow of hindsight made that bit up. Anybody able to confirm or dash my memory

I will be interested to read what you think of the book. I have listened to Richard Gordon on the radio and I have not been impressed.
This opinion did not change after I heard him on a recent Celtic Underground podcast discussing his book and scottish football in general so as much as I would normally enjoy a book about that period I will certainly not be buying it.
The best sports writing in the scottish media during that period was to be found on the back pages of t

I suspect Ed that you may have a copy of McIlvaney on Football on your bookshelves, if you do have it after you read Richard Gordon's efforts read the two articles entitled "How it dawned on Ormond that his crew were rocking the boat" and "The week that Scotland were out of this world".

As Ed says he does tend to have a polarizing effect, I find his style to be amatuerish and parochial others will find him warm and easy to relate to.

I dont mind Richard Gordon on the radio though he could be considered a tad bland he stands out above the dross he works with. Archer was a great writer but dont remember him being a great presenter on TV but that could just be the memory not remembering.

Mcilvanney was certainly a great sports writer, some of his stuff on boxing was as good sports journalism as you will ever get, he was a great presenter too
