I watched Zero Dark Thirty the other day and I must say it was very good as is Bigelows other effort, The Hurt Locker.

With Kernow on this one preferring anti war films...
Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, Empire of the Sun, The Pianist and Boy in the stripped pyjamas.
Empire of the sun is also an amazing book.

No surprise that you prefer 'anti war'

Anyone else notice the one childish and ignorant post on this thread. An original one trick pony.

I hate it when decent threads get de-railed, if I was a squinnying little runt I'd probably complain to the moderators.

I particularly love Vietnam films and somewhat surprised that my two faves have not yet been mentioned. Both also highlight the pointlessness of that war and what people were subjected to during it. Apocalypse Now and The Deer Hunter. Platoon would be my other fave of that genre.

Of recent war films I've seen (since 2000) one has stood out a mile, Letters From Iwo Jima. The second part of Eastwood's two sided look at that battle, his Japanese version is so much better than the Yankee one.

    I tried watching that one.

Fell asleep after about 30 seconds.

If you want to watch a really good TV series, check out Generation Kill.
Even though I don't like Mel Gibson, I have to agree that We Were Soldiers was outatanding. When I was in Vietnam, I went to quite a few of the battle sites, including Khe Sanh, which was one of those battles where the Americans were under siege, trying to hold out in an isolated last outpost, completely surrounded by tens of thousands of North Vietnamese troops. An American war vet told me that he found Full Metal Jacket the most realistic of the Vietamese war films, but knowing that it was mostly filmed in Dorset has always prevented me from being convinced by it.

Enemy at the Gates, Platoon, just the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, The Deer Hunter, The Thin Red Line, Apocaly
