To answer the original question; exactly the same companies tha are doing it now.

Ensco, Maersk, Transocean, Dolphin etc

Funded by operators such as BP, Shell, Chevron, Total and lots of newer smaller players.

Once producing the current UK treasury takes around 80% of the revenue.
In an independent Scotland, it would be up to the new government to determine what that percentage should be.

Firstly glad to see this ill informed numpty has conceded there is still loads and loads of oil to be got, The Bently field, The massive Clare field which Cameron tried to keep secret !! The firth of Clyde once we get rid of the evil WMD, Scotland will be the BIGGEST Oil and Gas producing country in Europe, And the OP who will drill for it ? The Government, who own the land or sea to be exploited, assign drilling rights as 'blocks' of areas to successful applicants to go exploring, BP, Shell, or whoever.

These licenses don't cost so much, but the areas assigned come with the caveat that they must be exploited within a time frame, or otherwise they get relinquished by the licensee, for reissue to other companies who may want to go for them.

Thats not cast in stone of course, its just what a responsible Government would impose on the applicants.

When the successful applicants drill the areas they are interested in, they may find huge oil reserves, hopeful that the Government in charge will hold the tax regime in place long enough for the oil company involved to base an economic plan/spend against cost on the discovery.

Again, you need a responsible Government in place to give the company confidence said Government won't move the goalposts while t
