Right, but other than a re-branding exercise, how does the Premier League differ from the old Division 1?

Today the highest division in the Football League is the Championship and it's no longer the top competition. That was then, this is now, hence the OP says Premier League.
Other than that I've looked at Match Of The Day revisited from the 70's and you can hardly notice the difference.
