My dad was born in Harrogate and he was a good footballer, his youth side played against the top youth side from Ripon which was the next nearest town in Yorkshire.
My old man was 14 at the time and his side was not used to losing but on this day they lost 7-0 at Ripon in what dad assured me was
was a very close match!
The difference between the sides was Derek Kevan who scored all 7 goals,my dad said he was immense.
At 14 he was already like a fully grown man compared to the other lads.
I saw Derek play in a testimonial at the Albion during the Buckley era,it might have been Stuart Naylor's match,Alan Buckley and his sons also played.
Derek was over 50 and weighed a ton mainly due to being a rep for a beer company I expect.
It's fair to say I didn't see him in his pomp!
Dad said he was the best player he ever shared a pitch with.
Saw Kevan play for my ist 2 seasons. Like Talksaft used to collect the blue star badges, having got them now, they are fetching around £45 on E-Bay. Derick used to come in our local The Prince Albert Sams lane, for a pint and to sell the Albion raffle tickets.
£45!!!???
That should pay for my New Year's Eve - I've got Derek Kevan and Stan Jones somewhere in my loft......the badges, I mean.
Kevan scored a hattrick in my first match. So did Francis Lee. Don't think I've seen 2 in a game since.
Great posts Lads , love this sort of stuff ,
Used to watch Albion train at Spring rd a lot. If you told Stan he was good in training he used to give you extra chips. His Chip shop was next to the Dartmouth pub up West Brom. Anyone remember Stan serving his chips, Bobby Hope had a newsagent,Sir Bobby Robson worked afternoon as a sales rep. Players today have got it easy
My first Albion game in 1958/59 saw Derek Kevan score the winner three minutes from time in a 2-1 win v. Wolves at the Hawthorns. He was often described by certain quarters of the press as just being a big, lumbering centre forward but he was much more than that. He was a goal scorer, remember what one of those was. He scored regularly at all levels, including England. He was incredibly strong and good in the air and could be relied on to score 20+ in a season, sometimes reaching the 30 mark.
I was there that day, 9goals. 5-4 v Bolton. (Is that where your name came from?)
Was also at the 2-1 over Wolves, Leicester. Wolves were probably top before that game (?), and we'd have been Top 4.
It was 1958, a few days before the family moved from Handsworth to Solihull. Every kid in our Class was a Baggie, and a few days later I was the only Baggie in my new Class.
