Further investigation has given me this insight......

The Referee should allow play to continue. The Referee is not responsible for deciding which players should play and which players should NOT play in a team. The Referee therefore, has no jurisdiction in insisting that the reluctant player MUST leave before allowing play to continue. The Referee should consult the Manager and/or the Captain and seek their assistance to resolve the situation.

If the player remains adamant that he will not leave, then there are several options:

    (a) If at all possible, play should continue. It is the manager’s/captain’s job to sort out the team.

    (b) If the manager is adamant that this player must be substituted, but the player still refuses to come off – the Referee should speak to the manager and inform the manager that he (the Referee) has no jurisdiction to force the player off the field of play.

    (c) If the manager pulls all his other players off the field of play, the game should be abandoned and the facts reported to the appropriate authority.

The following action may be considered by the Referee as a last resort.

    (d) In accordance with Law 3 (Number of players) – "for any other infringements (to those specifically mentioned) of this Law, the players concerned are cautioned and shown the yellow card."

It is therefore possible in Law, to caution this player for unsporting behaviour, for refusing be substituted. If the same player refuses a second time, it is possible to receive a second yellow card (for unsporting behaviour) leading to a sending-off.

    (e) Abandon the game: There is some leeway in Law 5, which gives the Referee the power to "terminate a game at his discretion, for any infringements of the Laws."
But in this case, the reluctant player has breached no specific Law. Nevertheless, if the Referee decides that the circumstances warrant the termination of the game, he should report the circumstance of the ‘reluctant player’ to the appropriate authority.

    So, as I said...’storm in a teacup’.
Manager misinterprets his keeper being injured...keeper doesn’t need to go off...manager thinks he’s being ignored...throws a spectacular and uncharacteristic strop and loses his dignity...everyone joins in a witch-hunt.
Little if anything the referee could have done about it...much ado about nowt!

rA, you assume that the substitution was being made for injury (alleged injury) but how do we know that Sari was not wanting to bring on Caballero for penalties? After all he has a great record at stopping penalties in Wembley finals and is a former Mank City player so would know the habits of their penalty takers. Its not unprecedented to bring on a specialist penalty stopper in the last minute or so for that very purpose, I think Ive seen it done twice?

I assume that the substitution cannot be made after the full time whistle has been blown {MA?}, so (if this was Sari's motivation behind the decision) I think its not a manager having an unreasonable hissy fit at all, but a manager being undermined by a precious player, not unusual in the PL and indeed at Chelsea.....

Fair point GP, and I reckon I’d have saved Aguero’s effort, it was that poor.
We’re never going to know the truth though and in my opinion Sarri let himself down massively. Not got much time for Chelsea but I’ve always respected Sarri...thought he behaved like a petulant child yesterday.
