Players today can get themselves into vulnerable positions knowing that they have got the protection of a helmet.
Perhaps, as is often the case, I'm looking at things through 'rose tinted glasses' but I can always remember, as a child, the likes of Graveney, Cowdrey, Hutton etc. swaying gracefully out of the way of a short pitched delivery or, as I say, has time blurred my memory?
Don't think you are wrong LB the quickest reaction movement is with the head and providing you keep your eye on the ball it is unlikely that you get hit.
Wasn't there a survey about drivers driving faster when seat belts were made law, similar situation I suppose. The amount of batsmen that turn their heads nowadays makes me cringe.

Only ever involved in a walking incident once.

Batting middle order I was caught in the covers and started to walk. Called back by the fielder who reckoned he had grounded it. I went on to win the match with our No.11 at the other end by hitting a 4 off the last ball and completing a 50.

All of this in the febrile atmosphere of The Cuckmere Valley Cricket League (sadly no more after 100 years.)
