I often wonder how you "interview well" for a football managers job.

It's a phrase that gets bandied about a lot.

What does a good interview look like in football management terms?

We can afford to pay you £X. do you want the job? If so, do you have anyone you want to bring with you? If so, how much will your "support team" cost?

Think it comes down to how much we want to pay, and the new manager assumes that he can bring in as many players as he wants. That is until McPake got the job. no big budget for players, bring on the youth and try to find a blend of youth and experience.

Dorrans and Adam won’t be on sweetie wrappers.

McPake has been backed with cash, he’s just not up to it.

That's maybe the bit when you have been chosen Bcram or am I picking you up wrong.

You identify 3 or 4 people, what does a good interview look like?......I'm not so sure the interview bit counts for much.

If there's something you don't like in the background then you'd already know about it.

Surely at the mighty level it's all about given a proven manager with a decent level track record another shot or someone who has performed well in the lower reaches.

I'm just not sure what a good interview looks like.

Does the employer go on gut feeling, go with what he's comfortable with? Or go cheap.

Now im maybe no the best person to duscuss this as I've only employed one person in my puff, Jdfc for a pool match in Spain, in hindsight a terrible appt but I managed to hold my nerve, retained his services and scrape by and we won....he was sacked in the immediate aftermath though.😁

One person has never been mentioned.
    The football agent.
It is likely that as soon as a managerial post becomes vacant or a football manager receives the ‘kiss of death’ vote of confidence from the board of directors, the agent of an out of work Football manager will take note.
It is likely that the agent will be in touch with the club ‘selling’ the ability of his client as the next manager of their football club.
There is certainly something far wrong at Dundee Football Club regarding the appointment of suitable managers as McCann, McIntyre and now McPake have been no use as managers despite having been backed financially.

I agree. But John Nelms wont change things and even if he was of a mind to do so, could we trust his choice? I suspect not.

Does anyone think that there are actually interviews? Or do others think, like I do, that the successor has been picked even before the incumbent is bagged?

JN has a list of people he's identified as fitting his list of requirements seemingly, is he just running down the list until someone agrees, sacking whoever's in the seat then bringing his man in? Never seems to have been any gap between sack and hire since Nelms has been responsible for the hiring. It was no secret that we were after Hartley for instance - he resigns from Alloa - Brown resigns from us - Hartley in post almost instantly.

I doubt there are any interviews; Nelms is too much of a control freak to risk hiring someone with a mind of their own to report directly to him.

Probably had ideas that didn't fit with what JN wanted. Do we know he was interviewed or was it speculation at the time?
