I always think this Balan regarding the numerous Cancer charities. Why on earth should we have to resort to begging bowls, tin-rattling, Christmas card sales, charity shop proceeds and lottery tickets to finance the prevention, treatment, care and after-effects of cancer, just wtf is the government doing with our money when fund raising on such a scale is necessary ?

Exactly !Same thoughts. I am not sure how it gets to where it does, what paths it follows, but the wrong type of people are handling it

There are four inter-related defects inherent in global capitalism. The first fatal flaw is great concentration of wealth. Greed is the excessive and selfish pursuit of wealth or other material things, without concern about whether one’s actions deprive others of necessities. Rather than controlling this instinct, unregulated capitalism encourages it. Some proponents of free market capitalism go so far as to argue that greed should be considered a positive trait because the race to maximize profits propels the global economy forward. As the character Gordon Gekko in the film Wall Street said, “Greed… is good!”

“The world needs a powerful “wake-up call” to make everyone realize that to survive, we have to change now.”

Though the wealth of the world is steadily increasing, the world’s richest people are hoarding almost all of it. And because of this huge, increasing gap between the rich and the poor, common people can afford to buy very little.

For example, the chief executive officers (CEOs) of multinational corporations are paid salaries with stock options that Fortune magazine describes as “outrageous!” In 2009 Aubrey McClendon of Chesapeake Energy received US$114 million, Lawrence Ellison of Oracle received US$130 million, and H. Lawrence Culp Jr. of Danaher received US$141 million. On average the CEO of a Standard & Poor’s 500 index company was paid US$9.25 million in compensation in 2009. During the same year, millions of U.S. workers lost their jobs, their homes and their retirement savings in the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.

The disparity between rich and poor continues to grow. The wealth of the world’s 51 richest people more than doubled during the last eight years, to more than US$1 trillion. This is more than the combined annual income of half the world’s population–three billion human beings.

When wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few and not circulating productively, ordinary people have less and less purchasing power.

The second fatal flaw of global capitalism is that the vast majority of investments are now made in speculation instead of production. The tremendous wealth held by the richest people is rarely invested in establishing companies, paying salaries, or producing goods. We can understand why this happens by observing what motivates big investors.

The third fatal flaw of global capitalism is debt, encouraging consumers and businesses to buy on credit. Corporations spend hundreds of millions of dollars on advertising campaigns to make debt sound desirable and risk-free. Their sophisticated global ad campaigns and direct mail programs are aimed at every age group, from young ****agers to the elderly.

The fourth fatal flaw of global capitalism is its tendency to exploit and ignore the natural environment. In addition to causing terrible human suffering, capitalist greed and mismanagement are destroying the environment. Unsustainable by its very nature, capitalism strives for ever- expanding markets, increasing consumption and production on a finite planet. The insatiable drive for profits results in corporations wielding their influence, money and power to get around or limit environmental laws and regulations.

Today’s multinational corporations are so big and powerful that they are out of control. Their structure and practices increase the gap between the rich and the poor, a gap that is dividing humanity. Because most investments are speculative instead of productive, and because of rising debt, the global economy is in serious trouble. Greed, the engine behind global capitalism, is a mental disease.

I’ve met some great people on the streets some ex service men ( which I can’t understand - our country at all for ). And always try to give a few quid or a sleeping bag / coat etc
This is a good awareness campaign and deserves some spotlight - instead of the rubbish we’re exposed to every week.
My two older brothers were in the forces. One did several tours of Northern Ireland and is relatively ok. The other served in the Middle East and was not so fortunate. Fortunately with the help of various agencies he now lives nearby where Mrs Outwood and I can see he stays ok. I don’t give to lots of charities. People rarely choose to become homeless and live on the streets. I think I can give some help and so I hope will our club.

Whilst I do not disagree that there are serious defects in a capitalist system, it does have positive aspects too. I do not agree that”most investments are speculative”. The outcome of any investment has a degree of speculation - it may not work, for example, but if one takes one area, medical science, would we have seen the same advances without capitalist investment? Is it simply “speculation” to research and develop an MRI scanner or a new drug?

I do agree though that all human beings, rich or poor, should have the same access to an MRI scanner or a new drug.

An example of the disgraceful way it operates is the commitment by the British Government to provide a fixed % of GDP in foreign aid - then sends money to China and India. The Foreign Office does not even follow up on the use of funds. At year end, there is a mad dash to give money away to make sure it has been distributed. Madness.

I apply the same matrix to the "Help for Heroes" fundraising sinkov.

Why the **** do the MOD not look after their own?

I would love to see a breakdown for the monies received against poppy sales.

I agree BT. It is a sick society where men and women are sent by the Government to risk life and limb for a cause they may not understand or agree with. Then afterwards, with PTSD, limbs lost they are abandoned to charity. It is a national disgrace.

Ahh Swiss politics is your forte I think what a question that is , we a tiny island sending money to two of the richest countries in the world when they have poverty and exploitation of people and never ask a question about it .

It’s like selling arms to the Middle East or us driving the green debate - a tiny island like a pimple on the arse of the world making commitment to be carbon free while India China and many more continue to ignore the obvious.

We are approaching madness in this country - sending money to help people I understand completely but for us to do it when they obviously don’t care is wrong.

Finally I would just like us to sort our own problems / issues out before we start with GDP around the world - get your own house in order - homeless - un - employment - poverty etc etc

The problem is this current cabal of Cabinet Minister Conservative and Unionist Cretins led by a blonde-haired, grinning, smirking, clueless clown, aided and abetted by their quisling sidekick Kier Starmer still think we are a global superpower, and believe that sending an already obsolete aircraft carrier to the South China Seas will scare the Chinese Communist Party $hitless.

2 out of 4 of our nuclear subs are in dry dock because we can't afford to repair them. Braindead or what?
