Ideally we would replace more than a couple of players for one's that showed both better quality and attitude but that isn't reality. Of those that need to go I would agree with many of those mentioned like Livermore, Molumby, Reach, Bartley and Zahore but thats already too late now with the first two having been offered new contracts😞 and who The f uck would entertain Zahore?
The rest? Up front guess we have to hope Dike fulfils our hopes. Robinson is a shadow of the player he was against Chelsea and undoubtedly misses link up play with Pereira but has done Jack most of this season and would prefer to keep Grant over him. I know he certainly hasn't justified what we paid for him and is too much of a confidence player but still think Grant could get us some goals with different players around him. Have to say that I agree with Dave about Carroll and would keep. Yes, he is past his best and may not play many 90 minutes but he is one of the few that shows intent and could still get us some goals with better service if (big if) we can get players in to provide it.
Mowatt hasn't been the same since his mate Val left and offers little and needs moving. Diangana has skills but is too lightweight and too often doesn't have the impact he should. Don't know how his contract stands but given that we now won't be getting shot of Livermore or Molumby I can see us trying to move him on simply because he is one of the few players we have that others might possibly be interested in -but knowing us he will go and then realise his potential at his new club!
Clarke we definitely need to try and keep and the others we will probably retain. Hopefully Ajayi and O'Shea will recover their form and TGH will learn to curb his petulance (a decent Captain would help here!). Townsend isn't the greatest but he at least tries and whilst his recent stats can be woeful so does Furlong. With Johnstone going Button I think will do a job for us as GK.
As has been said so many times, our main problems (aside from our owner/manager/recruitment team!) are both lack of a natural goalscorer and lack of creativity and energy in midfield. Hopefully Dike will help with the first but sadly cannot see us being able to attract anyone with the abilities needed to fulfil the second. Can only hope by some miracle we discover an unknown gem from the lower leagues perhaps.
Plenty in the press still about Bruce and the club promising a major overhaul of the team and the potential of some of our academy players but the decisions made so far certainly don't back up all the rhetoric. Doesnt look hopeful does it?
The squad needs a complete overhaul both regarding personnel and attitude. I realise it's going to be difficult to rid ourselves of high earners who have been poor acquisitions but we need to explore all avenues in order to achieve this. There are too many players who are at the back end of their careers, Bartley, Livermore, Phillips for instance, who retain their places. We need a more youthful approach all round. Button, for instance. He's decent enough but we should be realising the potential of Griffiths or Palmer. I don't have a problem in signing Molumby as he is only 22 and has time to improve. However, if we continue on our current path of signing older players we will be going nowhere fast
Haven't got time to read the whole thread but going by the title I can't help but think it would have been a better strategy to have started the strong run to the end of the season on the day Bruce was appointed.
