So you are 1 down with no time left, it's a cup game and you are about to go out anyway. Why would you want your keeper on his line when the ball and play is all the way down the other end of the pitch? I'd much rather the keeper be out where he was in the ball was won back by a South Shields player to then have an option to pass back and recycle the ball with a desperate punt towards the FGR box. Or if the ball was just hit long by FGR to waste time. I wouldn't want the keeper 20-30 yards back in that scenario.

Opposition lobbing the ball from just inside the half happens so rarely to me it was a no brainer. As you say it was where many keepers stand, that's because the head coach or specialist goalkeeping coach has told them to be. They know.

After all it takes something special and sensational like Wickhams finish to score.

Doyle’s was very good as I think he had to control the skewed clearance from the keeper or defender but the keeper was well out as I remember.
