He was backed after he couldn't save us from relegation, lucky not to be sacked tbh. The club was on a high, heading to the top of L1, when he walked out for a club at the bottom & also had no money then. When you look back, that was the start of our downward spiral.
Somebody who says they aren't interested in the job, leaves a note under the door & goes up to the new club in his company car, in my books is what I called him. same for Bolton.
As we know & you say, it's all about opinions
Pavis was looking to sell up at the time Sam left, to the former owner of Doncaster Rovers who'd dropped into non-league and almost went extinct during his spell at the helm. Sam would have been crazy to turn the Bolton job down and stick with Notts. He left us in a far better place than he found us, 20 places or so higher. Bolton and the FL were the villains of the piece for us not being compensated.
Allardyce is a conceited, arrogant man with a massive chip on his shoulder! He is also an obnoxious, offensive man and his disastrous conduct as manager of England, combined with his deceitful, duplicitous exit from Notts tells you all you need to know about the bloke.
He probably believes his own hype and publicity - despite there being absolutely no evidence to support his views in respect of his managerial ability!
That is the top and bottom of it, full stop.
How many managers turn down a job at a bigger club at a higher level? Bolton were averaging around 20k at the time having already moved to their new ground. Notts were averaging 5,839 that season at the point Sam left.
On what basis was he supposed to turn Bolton down and stick with Notts? He'd already repaid Pavis's faith in him by getting the club back up into tier 3 and re-establishing us at that level.
It's weird that Ardley gets praised for taking us out of the FL before ending up with Solihull in 15th place in the NL whilst Big Sam is hated for being successful and going on to better things, taking relatively unfashionable clubs into the PL and keeping them in it (with the exception of WBA).
For me, it's the way he left.
Took all players out on the lash the night before and not telling them. He also just slipped his resignation letter under the chairman's door that night never to be seen again.
Don't get me wrong,, he's a fantastic manager and knows how to win but that leaves a bad taste.
