What a vile and childish thread this is becoming. How sad bearing in mind the seriousness of the original subject.
No-one is waving a white piece of paper. The amount of universal condemnation thus far has been pretty well unanimous and is squeezing Russia and Russians into an uncomfortable space.
But even so what would you have the western powers do? As Sid saidThe west could no doubt stop Russia in it's tracks, have a turkey shoot at the convoys, take down any Russian aircraft and even advance in to Russia. How mad is Putin? Would he press the button? How much are you prepared to risk? I've asked myself that question the last few days. Would his own people stop him first? Or would the generals be grouped around Putin with their vodka shouting "vashe zdorovie" as the button is pressed? The first strike in a nuclear conflict is believed by most seasoned diplomats and leaders to come from - ultimately - the losing side. The second reactive strike will be final.
Be clear that Russia will not be allowed to walk into NATO space unchallenged. The world is aware he's a bully, that Russia is a bear and that is why Eastern countries have clamoured to join NATO.
Time for some clarity from you and less name calling. Stand up and be counted. Your plan please.
And as Moscow/Russia goes up in smoke he's got nothing to lose so presses the nuclear buttons, bye bye London, Paris, New York, Washington, etc even if he doesn't live long enough to watch it happen.
Are you prepared to accept that consequence? Or are you of the belief that it won't happen like that and John Wayne is alive and kicking?
Sensible summary, and I wonder if the eventual solution will be that "his own people stop him first". It seems obvious that this is Putin rather than Russia, and in a democracy he would have already been stopped. Protest isn't looked on kindly in Russia, but surely in time the average Russian will see there is no benefit to them at all in this conflict. Even though it's not the "bomb the f@ckers" approach some are demanding, making Russia a pariah by the rest of the world is as much as we can realistically do, apart from supporting the Ukranians as much as we can.
