This first five minutes conceding thing is easy to fix, just tell the defence to lump it forward until ten minutes have gone. They will be settled in then and the intial press from the other team will have eased off. It's no wonder we get into trouble when six players are pressing three who are trying to tippy tappy out

Exactly this, Barrow was a perfect example. I said to my mates that Barrow wouldn't be able to keep up the same energy and that the second half would be different, so teams now have a template for how to play against us.

    1. First half, high energy, high press, hopefully score.

    2. Sit deep defending a lead, park the bus and spoiling tactics, we're seeing this week in week out against us but we seem unable to work out a fix.

This tippy, tappy stuff at the back when you're being pressed so effectively, looks set for disaster every time. We don't seem to have worked out though that when teams are piling forward to press, it leaves a big gap in midfield which we should be able to exploit.

The problem with this tactic is that our midfield just can't win 1st and 2nd balls so the opposition seemingly walk through it. If we just lump it forward they get more of the ball and grow in confidence and press more. We don't then get the chance to settle in after 10 minutes.

It's the fact that the ball is moved away from our goal and [I]hopefully[I] they are delayed coming forward again by the oncoming midfield. Probably naive but it's something in those first exchanges?

This is exactly what's needed. Ball into the corners, wing backs high, pinning in the opposition. Ask Crowley to join in scrapping for the ball for the first ten minutes. Our current game plan allows us to be under pressure from the off. It isn't rocket science.
On a positive note, I've started to season my hat. I'm still not 100% convinced by Maynard but his hooking of Hinchy (SM made nice noises in the presser) was ***** and he didn't p*** about doing it. Well done SM.
For the moaners and groaners on here. This league is historically tight. Nearly a third of the season gone and we are in an automatic spot. All teams have injuries, but it is fair that few could be as debilitating as us not having Jones available, yet we continue to pick up points without our best player. The squad is much stronger than last season and on balance, there is much to be happy about even if we are not blowing sides away. The defensive recruitment has been excellent and that is allowing us to pick up points late in games that would've been out of reach last season. COYP

The 'poor' half to which you refer, is because we're allowed to be more expansive in the second half as teams sit back and defend what is often a lead, it's not our tactics that effect change, it's theirs. As already stated, our style looks fragile under the high press with players regularly, looking like they might lose the ball or worse.
Yes I think we are struggling to effective adjust to counter this tactic from opposition. Obviously that is easier said than done and something the coaches need to work out with the players currently available.

The improved second half is also because you can’t effectively play the fast high press for 90 mins whether they are leading or not. Energy levels won’t allow it. Although it emphasises the need to score first which we aren’t doing.

Might lose the ball doesn’t worry me at all, lose the ball in those areas does not that we are conceding many goals this season.

It will get very difficult for us if DM and/or AJ get injured (DM must be due a rest very soon)
