Hard to compare different guitarists, can't really compare the more clean sounding Strat players like D.Gilmour, M.Knopfler, A.Summers, etc. to heavy crunchy Les Paul users like Alex Lifeson, Neil Young, etc.

Brian May is a great guitarist.
Lifeson's best stuff was on a Gibson 335 dot (not an LP) and Andy Summers is a Fender Telecaster man. I agree about it being subjective; a lot of newer guitarists are technically gifted but haven't ever played a decent riff/tune.
