For me; I don't think the players themselves are bad but are being signed for a system different to the one used in previous years. Some might argue that Clement will want to change the system slightly, but having made signings so early on in his tenure, having not seen the current squad in action, how could he know what system he wants to implement?

Take our centre-half recruitment for example. For me, and I know a lot of people don't agree with me on this point, our centre-halves need to be good on the ball more than they need to be defensive beasts. So we need to sign players that fit this mould. Something we haven't done.

Take Albentosa for example. Albentosa is an excellent defender in a organised side that defends deep and asks for it's defenders to only head, kick and tackle. For us, our centre-halves are often high up the pitch (so his lack of pace is exposed) and he is asked to play the ball (something he isn't comfortable doing). These players with the exception of Weimann are free transfers. Putting wages and money aside for a second, the reason why we have these players early is because they're easier to complete than full transfers! We're in the market for about 3/4 more players - which involve transfer fees - which will be definite improvements on our playing staff.


Clement said when he came in that the squad wasn't big enough. We've filled the squad out a bit now and future signings will be the ones to improve us. Starting with Weimann, there may well be Ince, Shackell, Bridcutt and maybe even Jota to come in.
