Grist, as you don't follow F1, you obviosly don't know the rules. Verstappen left the track to overtake and that is simply not allowed.
If he carried on, what he wanted to do, he would have taken a 5 second penalty. It was clearly obvious with the tyres he was driving on were far superior to Hamilton's, with that in mind he knew and most of us F1 fans knew he would have swept clear of Hamilton and probably amassed 6 seconds or more so, the 5 second penalty meant nothing.
In this 'Gentlemans' sport, his crew/owners instructed him to let Hamilton pass and attempt to take him again but cleanly rather than face a 5 second ban and accused of cheating. Verstappen was obviously angry at his management and wanted to carry on and take the penalty. Hand on heart, I think Hamilton would have reacted the same as Verstappen.
