The London DLR trains/trams don’t even have drivers let alone guards

It’s progress in a modern world as systems become more automated

A major concern is passenger safety, ie; lone female passengers, travelling late at night or dark evenings etc. trains without guards/ticket inspectors is asking for trouble in this evil world.

Also don’t forget the fare dodgers costing rail companies millions of pounds every year. Every train should have a guard for public safety but, the penny pinching company shareholders just want to see the dividend at the end of the year.

Due to it's design however, the DLR still requires attended staff, without whom the service cannot operate. So if the 'dream' is to remove the annoying staff with their unreasonable pay demands for the future, then you are simply moving the type of potential striking staff from one group of workers to another. As this articles discusses (for anyone interested), driverless trainsa in the UK are decades and centuries away as you pretty much have to re-design the whole network (trains and tube) to accomodate the complexity:

Sadly, as always, the notion of driverless trains has become used as a political football, symbolising to people who can't be bothered to read into the complexity of the issue, that Unions are just protecting jobs and are anti-modernisation. Very little mention that if we want driverless trains, you pretty much have to take down the existing network and create a new one.

It would be nice if the train guards/ ticket inspectors actually did their jobs. Many times I’ve been from Roth to Sheff without having my ticket checked. I’ve even been to York and back with no checks.

The train drivers are the best paid in Europe and on £5000 a month, I don't know what else they want, that's ASLEF.

Meanwhile the top 73 railway executives have enjoyed inflation busting pay rises for years and now are paid over £15m per year combined (based on figures from 2021 so this will be much more now). Current industrial unrest aside, remember that the railway fat-cats have been lining their pockets whilst passenger fares have sky-rocketed and the standard of day to day services has steadily declined.

It makes me laugh how folk bang on about how much more railworkers are paid than nurses or care workers. Care-workers are typically paid minimum wage and many have to rely on foodbanks or welfare state help to survive....but let's talk about dragging the rest of the country down to their level rather than look at ways to improve the standard of living and quality of life of the vast majority.

Arguing amongst ourselves just lets the real parasites and spongers carry on with ripping the rest of us off.

Nurses wages come from taxpayers, rail workers wages come from rail users paying exorbitant fares.

Cheaper rail fares in Europe because they're not paying drivers £60,000 a year.

Isn't this what happened introducing min wage and all its done is made the better off more wealthy because of the poor are getting it the rich want more. Now even if they introduce a living wage this in the future increases the cost of living and inturn makes the people on a living wage poor.

Personally I can't see a difference between min wage and benifefits.
