We definitely need 2 or 3 new players before attrition and injuries ruin our season. However some on here will just sit on what we have and spend most of their time sniping at us, calling us bedwetters or other such insults when in reality all we want is a competitive team.
You think Gordon, who was a regular starter at wing back for a team that finished well above us and got promoted, was a replacement for a guy who hasn’t played that position for about four years, and another guy who started about five games all season? Let’s live in the real world.
Deary me there definitely needs to be some fact checking on this thread especially when it comes to money spent and received for players in past few years.
We all want a competitive team and sure all would love 2 or 3 new players who aren’t just bench fillers. Problem is recruitment isn’t that simplistic. Lots of moving parts. I imagine for us mere mortals outside of football it’s a bit like trying to buy a house when you are in a lengthy chain.
It’s refreshing to see the complaints are now about recruitment quantity rather than quality which we suffered for years. We used to have no problem filling a squad with rabble and rejects. Not anymore.
2 maybe 3 if we can move Stone on agreed, I’ve not seen a single instance of anyone willing to ‘sit on what we’ve got’ everyone acknowledges (including Maynard) that we need a couple of bodies in but they have to be quality and be able to make a difference.
The ‘bed wetting’ accusations come because some on here act so childish when expecting players instantly, when they’d be the first to complain if we signed some cheap squad filler like Tipton.
How about let the people who do this for a living erm… do it. And judge them after the window has closed?
We’re certainly short, but not as bad as what some are thinking, I feel. It all depends on what system we settle on.
Are we that short on striking options? Especially as we only ever play one out and out striker. Scott can play that number 9 role, for sure, and I hope he gets chance to prove that soon because he is getting unfair criticism at the minute. I’d quite like to see how playing Jatta in the wider position and either Scott or Didzy as the focal point of the attack would work out.
We have Gordon, Austin, and Jodi who can play RWB. We now have plenty of options in midfield with Palmer and Robbo returning. There seems to be cover at CB for either a back three or four as well, so I think the only position I’d like to see come in is support for LWB, but can’t Cisse cover that?….and Jodi too.
I’m certainly not as worried as some on here about the quality of our squad, I think recruitment so far has been pretty good. It’s pointless going out and signing a first choice WB or striker because he’d be sat on the bench behind Didzy and Scott….I’d quite like to see Morias come back instead of signing anyone else.
Exactly.
All this nonsense about the squad before the window closes is mind boggling.
I know we are not Premier League but look at the activity building in that league… been very little movement at the top clubs, does that mean they don’t want to win the league? Or will the top 3 add to the ranks on or before the end of the window?
I think the recruitment has been excellent. My measure is this… who would you have back that’s left in the last 3 months?
Only Langstaff for me and that’s what it is. Agree with all those that see Jatta as his replacement, although would question if we’d ok without him for a month somewhere down the line (but that’s no different to where we were 12 months ago with Langstaff?). Perhaps Scott/Didzy seemed more adequate at that point.
Nemane is good business in my eyes. Anyone who thinks Kellen Gordon has come here to be back up to Aaron Nemane hasn’t done their homework. So a fee and player you were interested in for your second choice wing back who’s leaving for nothing in 12 months, yes please. On a side note, a Barnsley fan told me the fan base were keen to keep Grant in L1 - make of that what you will. It does leave us short a right wing back which I hope will be addressed if for no other reason that I don’t want to see JJ there (ever again). I think it was Matt that said JJ as a 10 - after all that’s where he started under LW. A 3-4–2-1 with Gordon/Tsaroulla as the WB and JJ/Crowley as the 10’s would do for me. Hinchy, Edwards, Grant, Didzy, Scott, Austin, Cundy, McDonald makes for a pretty decent bench!
Finally if Stone is as unpopular as it seems (and I think it’s harsh - he’s been no worse than Slocombe) I think a loan keeper is probably needed. Like Sam, but not in goal.
In summary RM, please can we have a couple of loans up top and between the sticks and proper competition at RWB. The rest probably needs judging in half a dozen games if/when everyone is fit. I suspect we’re in for quite a few games like the first half on Sunday.
