Not sure how I feel about this. If he goes on to establish himself in the villa first team, then sell on fee aside, it’s a fairly derisory sum, and if he doesn’t, then we won’t see any of it. If he with us a few years established in the first team then that figure is much bigger.
Hope he does well though, but bit sad when you get a couple of games from a youngster and lose them. On other hand, he could have not signed a contract last season so could have been worse.
He's never going to stay with us for a few years though. Not many talented youngsters will in the future. It's the way of the footballing world nowadays. These boys are scouted from an age way younger than Kerr Smith is now, their progress tracked, and if good enough, gone before even getting in our first teams. We can't grumble at £800K for a guy who may never make it. We just need to make sure we sweeten the deals up enough so that if the potential is realised, we are rewarded. We could easily make double the £2M reported depending on the size of the sell on clause. He may do a Tierney, Hickey or Robertson and go for £20M in 5 or 6 years time. 20% of that would net us a cool £4M.
He could quite as easily pick up a career ending injury in his next match! As long as we have another young player on the conveyor belt ready to step up..then this is fine by me. We have to be careful not to sell too many prospects just to make a quick buck, its all about balance and not being greedy....we are still recovering from the fire sale from our previous owner.
The previous fire sale was all first team players though, so that had a bigger effect on the squad as a whole (as did the shockingly bad recruitment that followed).
Centre half we have a lot of talent coming through there even with Smith gone. Neilson moves up to number 3 into Smith's spot and we still have Adam Hutchison (next big thing btw), Nathan Cooney and even Ross Graham
