Call me cynical but these migrants are happy to live in makeshifts tents in Calais. I am sure that our holding centres are a step up on that.

The situation is untenable but finding a solution that is robust and can be both humanitarian and pragmatic is complex and there are no easy fixes. On one hand, there are those asylum seekers who are "genuine" and have left their own homes at great peril to avoid persecution and want to come here to work and make a better life for themselves but-very clearly-the increasing majority are either young male Albanians who are likely to have links with the growing gang problem here or else those people trafficked by them.

You would have thought that being an island would make defending our borders easier, but in this modern "civilized" age it is the opposite. With land borders you can put up walls and use armed guards and you know that those who don't get in are still relatively "safe" because they are on land. With the sea, you turn them back and given the precarious small craft they are in, this is not the case and their lives are at risk so you end up rescuing them and then having got them you then have to deal with them. This humanitarianism is what is being cynically exploited.

Seems pretty obvious that most would not want to see trafficked young women or migrant "economic" workers drown as they are victims in this so how do you stop it if you are not prepared to use gun boat patrols to turn these small boats back and refuse to rescue them when they get in trouble? In theory the processing system might seem a good idea to weed out the undesirables and send them back but it is both extremely costly and woefully unfit from both a humanitarian point of view and a security one. Once out of Manston and in hotels, too many are able to simply slip away into the country via established gang networks for example.

Don't like Cruella but the thistle has to be grasped. Once they are here there is a cost whether that be in housing them, processing them or deporting them to Rwanda. If you ignore the humanitarian concerns, then you stop it at source and border control simply use force to stop them landing here in the first place and refuse to rescue any who get in difficulty. You then invest more to tackle the growing foreign gang problem in the UK. This solution would ultimately work and would save money, cut down on illegal immigration and reduce criminality-but it would undoubtedly also lead to many innocents dying. There won't be too much political will for this option though and, to be fair, whilst some on here might (reasonably) think, well so what if these Albanian gang members drown, it was their choice to take the risk, how many could stand by and watch trafficked innocents drown?

There are other countries that face similar. Scilily, in particular, has long been the first point of access for those seeking to leave North Africa to work their way North into Europe but the difference is that most of these refugees are economic ones not gang members. The swelling numbers are driving concerns in even this more traditionally tolerant region of Italy however.

Don't know the answer to this but just saying that I don't think there are any easy answers and, if there were, they would have been implemented by now.

Even if it involved blanking out faces and disguising voices I’d just like to know?

If I were “escaping” a bad country, one of my last options would be the U.K. if I’m honest.

There has to be a big reason for heading to here, is it the handouts, the free housing, the free healthcare, a motobility car if you can feign a decent limp or is it the weather?

It’d just be nice to hear or see an honest report on why, why here?

Considering that the subject is the source of so much heated debate there has yet to be an open and more properly informed discussion with too many gleaning their beliefs from the headlines.

I think that both legal and illegal immigration need to be examined and discussed. In terms of legal immigration, since Brexit, the number from EU countries-particularly Poland-has fallen dramatically but that from India and Pakistan remain the highest. As for the illegal "boat" people, a few years ago most were genuine refugees fleeing conflict from places like Syria, Chad, Sudan,Iraq, Yemen and Egypt. Latterly, Afghans have joined them but the big increase has been down to growing criminality such as Albanian gangs and so the root source of the problem has changed.

Only when we know the facts-or as close as we can get to them-can we formulate a proper strategy that tries to ensure that the overwhelming number of immigrants can both support themselves and add value to the country and a balance between humanitarianism and pragmatism struck.

Not difficult -get the Royal Navy to patrol the channel and tow these illegals back. You have to be tough to be kind!

Coming to the U.K. is easy to answer - free housing -free NHS - free hand outs and the most tolerant country in Europe to migrants.

Sunak will soon raise taxes which many can’t afford along with energy and the cost of living crisis. Is there any wonder why the sympathy for Ukraine is weakening along with thousands of illegals entering when many can’t afford to feed their kids or heat their houses.

If anyone including Jug Ears Lineker has sympathy for these illegals then invite one or two into a spare room in your house. Don’t speak though for many who are resentful!

Depends on how you look at it.

It's not harder to recruit to posts that are eligible i.e. doctors, scientists, academics etc.. But you can't just gain a fruit picker from overseas anymore.

I mean to be fair, that is what people wanted to start seeing - The Australian model 'we'll have you if you're important'.

Are there not gaps in the NHS (not doctors), among HGV drivers, builders etc too?

Don't really disagree with any of the points made here but the moot point remains. The fella from the SDP is right of course in saying that the problem could be pretty much solved by having truly secure borders and is also right to say that you can have a secure border if you want to providing there is the political will to do so- but he also studiously avoids telling us one of the consequences of enacting that process. Truth #11 would be that lots of innocent and vulnerable people would very likely die . That is the problem. The answer, in Realpolitik, would be to enact secure border policies but it may prove too unpalatable for many.
