Think you've hit the nail pretty much on the head there WCV regarding today's culture of polarised positions. In truth most things are very rarely black and white but rather varying shares of grey but a reluctance to have proper, informed, debate seems to be the norm. for many these days. This attitude is hardly conducive to finding solutions to problems though is it? Personally, I think social media and "cancel culture" have a lot to answer for.

Lineker is entitled to his opinions and if he chooses to air them on tw@tter, then good luck to him, as long as he doesn’t spout his political views on his football and sport shows, which I don’t believe that he has. What I do take issue with him is his equating of our government (which I do believe to be incompetent) with that of Hitler, which in my opinion (which I am entitled to) is absurd.

As for Gary Lineker himself, it is my view that he is grossly overpaid for prompting comments from other ex footballers and for being a Co-presenter on the frightful SPOTY. The BBC is wasting licence payers money on the bloke. Why can’t he comment on matches, he’s played at the very top level and is far more eloquent than some of the dumbos that he prompts? At least if he opined on matches himself a lot of money would be saved by not paying exorbitant fees to the lifeless lumps that he has sat next to him.

It’s a real pity that this post has caused so much niggle between so many (normally) even minded posters.

I feel a bit sad after wading through all of this if I’m honest.

Some of us constantly being derided as “Daily Mail readers”, just really puerile nonsense when many line me don’t even have a newspaper or in my case, I don’t even watch the news anymore unless it’s a major world event…….I no longer watch anything much that has political content, the only thing I’ve listened to really was Starmer’s big speech a week or two ago.

I actually commented on here in a positive way about what he’d said.

I’ve derided this shambolic Tory party constantly in recent times including my HS2 post.

I believe in immigration, I believe in a points based system and on a basis of our needs such as with fruit pickers etc.

As for Lineker, I believe that most of us will have worked for company’s where certain rules were written into your contract.

Stuff about your conduct and how you carried yourself and expectations to be met.

If I worked for a media organisation like Lineker or in many other high profile jobs I wouldn’t do any social media.

Lineker is fabulously wealthy and 62 years of age…….he has a lot to say on a lot of stuff on Twitter and given his wealth and position and time of life he really should respect his contract and wishes of his employer or he should resign and go to Aljazeera or suchlike and be free of constraints.

I just hope regular descents posters calm down a bit and if they don’t then maybe this thread should be closed.

Is the updated Swastika not the ‘ Z ‘ symbol painted on all this madman’s armoured vehicles? At his age one would have thought tendering to his Russian rose garden would be more appropriate.

Apparently, in the words of a statement from the BBC ‘Lineker is stepping back from presenting MOTD.’

I listened to a clip by comedian Jim Davidson today about Lineker.

Let me point out here and now I don’t find him in the least bit funny but I did find myself agreeing with his point of view on this and act surprised myself.

His stance was that although you might dislike Lineker (as he himself admitted he does) but that he should be allowed his opinion and to put it on Twitter or wherever.

He contended that if you happen to like Jeremy Clarkson and his sometimes outlandish comments in the media then you can’t have it both ways.

He’s absolutely right, I see that.

The only caveat is that Clarkson now works for Amazon Prime and they couldn’t give a toss what he says but the BBC contract demands impartiality.

So as long as Lineker doesn’t break his contract rules and regs with the BBC of moves to another station with no rules governing this then that’s fine.

Sunak, our prime minister with no mandate, once again spends taxpayers' monies like confetti, but the story is eclipsed by Lineker. Say what you like, but Lineker has turned out to be an useful idiot for the Tories tonight.
