I was a lot more comfortable before I read his post-court statement, which seemed to blame the victims for being racist (although that didn't seem to come up in court at all) and thus didn't feel like there was all that much contrition.
He's in now. Been thinking about what's next.
I assume there'll be an interview with him soon. I think it'll be a disaster if this isn't brought up.
On the other hand if he comes across as truly sorry, explains what he's learned from it and how he's taken steps so it never happens again, and reaffirms his commitment to helping Notts move forward, I'll accept him. Nobody has no skeletons in their closet. I believe in second chances.
If he was having a heated discussion with a bouncer and the lady started getting all up in his grille and pulling his dreadlocks then you might understand why he slapped her, but after reading a bit about it I don't think that's what happened. He probably wouldn't have got fined 7k for that. At least you would hope not.
What it sounds like is he probably had some unresolved issues which were causing him to drink heavily and lead an inappropriate lifestyle. I know he's a young lad but ideally you wouldn't want a professional athlete in nightclubs arguing with bouncers in the first place.
You would hope that this was a low point that genuinely made him realise he had a problem with alcohol. The 'seeking help' thing can be a part of the PR play book as was mentioned the other day about Jenas. Alternatively it can actually be true - lots of people (especially in the UK where boozing culture is more prevalent than other parts of the world) have issues with drinking that only really get solved (or even recognised as a problem) when their behaviour starts to get out of hand. If he's used that as a catalyst to get help with whatever problems he was having then more power to him.
So he did what he did. As I said last night, either the bros have decided to 1) break with every precedent they've set like signing clean cut solid pros and devout Christians, and take a total gamble on a heavy drinking woman beating loose cannon, when we are not even desparate for a striker, or 2) they've done their background checks and are satisfied he's made the necessary changes to his lifestyle and wants to turn things around. It's one or the other and I'm pretty sure it isn't number 1.
Everyone has their own view of course but personally I think he's a good signing.
I like this signing. I’ve seen him play a handful of times and he will fit into our system and way of playing well I think, especially in the regard of how we could use him to impact games as a squad player. If we do play him as a winger he’ll be a valuable option to have and offers something different to what we don’t have at the minute.
He’s also got a lot of experience, and to those who worry about his character - we have an option to cancel come January. We’ve done some great business this summer, as well as keeping Jones and Crowley….and also money in the bank to strengthen for an assault on league one next season!
