The play offs - their effects on the games remaining

I was just having a look at the Scottish Championship table there and can't really believe how tight that division is.

It got me thinking about what things would have been like had no changes been made to the league setup last summer.

After all, we know Celtic will win the Scottish Premiership and we know Hearts, with their points deduction, are now shoe-ins to go down.

We have an interesting battle brewing for 2nd that teams like United and ICT are not yet out of, and there's still the issue of who will make the top 6 to be decided - although I always feel this is a kind of artificial excitment/issue.

However, with the relegation/promotion play off system now installed, no longer is the remainder of the season dead for teams languishing in the bottom half of the table.

And indeed, even though we have a title race in the Championship there's even more to play for throughout that league too.

There's a 3-way title battle between Falkirk, Dundee & Hamilton. But from Dumbarton in 4t

Play offs are a good idea and should have been introduced again years ago.

First division or rather "the championship" :/ looks quite tight. Is it not the case though that the play offs are more favoured towards the Premiership team ?

Still a long way to go in the top league and take Celtic out of it (permanently please ) and it should be an interesting run in.

I wouldn't say they benefit the Premiership team, no.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the team finishing 11th in the Premiership will play the team 4th in the Championship and the teams 2nd and 3rd in that division will also play a semi final if you like. The winners of those ties would then play off for the Premiership position the following season. That means the Premiership team must win two ties just to retain their status.

The effect of the play offs is to give teams from 8th-11th in the Prem and 4th-8th in the Champ something to play for. This time
