    Memories of the Celtic Riot at Fir Park

    Dame Timslayer’s brother is as fine a Bear as you’ll meet but he’s married into a Motherwell supporting family from, would you believe, Motherwell.

    And it was he and family that first footed the Timslayer estate at New Year, where the finest of claret (and several other beverages besides) was flowing liberally.

    The seasonal greetings over, the chat soon turned to all things Rangers, with a diversion to Motherwell. The Celtic Riot was still headline news in the town, even if the Scottish mhedia had left it alone weeks ago.

    Apparently, plod gave the Goon Brigade total free ride. Wee kids in the Motherwell fans were getting lifted for and gestures made in the direction of the assembled yahoo hoards but they made no attempt to stop them rampaging. Apparently, they were all allowed to stand in the isles at the bottom of the stairs, which particularly infuriated the Motherwell fans.     Mrs Colin Stein, me and my youngest are currently enjoying a wee week in Benidorm. Before we came she bought us both a Union Flag beach towel. Each night they fly proudly from our balcony separated by the bairns Rangers towel. I watch some of the locals walk by, stop and stare at the display and then discuss it, no doubt recalling that momentous night in Barcelona in 72 or the up and coming return visit by the Bears.

    Anyway at the poolside yesterday I was approached by a ****ney guy, who explained he was a Chelsea supporting serving soldier (and Bear friendly) and asked if the flag display was mine. I said yes, and he said he didnAt want to sound cheeky but that the towels were sometimes flying upside down. I thought he was being petty, but he explained he expected more from the Quintessential British Club and that it was that attention to fine detail that made us different from all the rest.
