Does One Need Have "Allegiance" to a Paticular Team?

Referring to the other thread on whether one's team affects their credibility, I find it odd that a lot of people on here seem to think that everyone has allegiance to a particular team.

I don't support any particular team, but enjoy watching football and which team I want to win can depend on who they're playing, but a lot of the time, I don't have any preference for one team or the other.

I don't think I'm alone in this. A lot of people don't support one particular team but are supporters of "football" in general.

I enjoy a jolly good show of 22 fair and hearty chaps knocking the ball around and trying to bash it into the net. Sandwiches at half time and beers all round at full time and a ruddy good fight. what.

Football is like women in a way, some people are forced into arranged marriage by their parents . Similarly some kids are told who they support . I am a firm believer that one should experience several football clubs before one settles down and gets married .There is very few clubs who have that " something special " which makes them 'more than just a football team' . I went to watch several clubs , was not there at any of them . When I went to watch DUFC I knew instantly that I had found the one true love of my life and we would be together forever. True story

I am also a firm believer that in order to keep a relationship healthy one should not resist "experiencing" with other clubs. I have since taken on a "mistress" , after trying a couple from Liverpool , London, and even a few low profile towns and cities down south I fell for Manchester United .

Occasionally when on holiday I have had flings with some other clubs , but I always come home to my United's.

Excellent analogy, Bob (I do assume you are the actual Robert Redford?).

I guess I'm one of those guys who never settles down, but likes to sample whatever new young delectable comes along and take the best from what is available at any given opportunity.

I think it's more the ethos of my generation.

We're less rooted in primitive tribal survival instinct and more atuned to the post-modern environment that invites a completely new approach to fulfilling our common destiny.

Some just settle for what they can get , the dregs that no one else wants. When the going gets tough they don't try to save their marriage / club. But they are too lazy and ugly to find another , so continue to pretend they are in the same loving relationship . Even though everyone else can see things have changed.

Always think it helps to favour one team over another, spices things up a bit - particularly if it's not an exciting game
