In 1606 Guy Fawkes and three of his fellow conspirators were "hung, drawn and quartered.
In 1943 German Field Marshall Friedrich Paulus surrendered his Sixth Army at Stalingrad. Of the 91,000 soldiers taken prisoner, 95% died in POW camps. The last being released in 1955. There were 22 Generals also captured, all whom looked markedly fit and well compared with the common soldier.
