    I used to know an old couple who lived in the same area and knew him pretty well, as thw husband was also a Master Plumber.
    They reckoned he was just the nicest bloke you could hope to meet.
    They said he would often travel by public transport to home matches after working on a plumbing job in the morning.
    Dont think too many of our current superstars would be up for that?

    Just before my time but go along with the theory that in any sport,a great player 50-60 years ago would have adapted to the speed and proffesionalism of today's world.

    This photo was taken at Stamford Bridge.
    I was there with my old man, who had taken me for a 5 day holiday in London to see a match every day.
    I have never forgotten this incident as that was the only bit of surface water on the whole pitch.
    However with the mans skill and pace he would have been a star in any era.
