There was a fantastic wee program on BBC2 Scotland the night. It was about Scotland and WW1, a lot of it was round the NE, specifically The Cabrach, where 800 men volunteered in the 1st month of the war, and many of the our should never came back.

They also mentioned Sunset Song, which is one of my favourite books of all time, about The Mearns from 1900 to WW1, the changes that the war wrought, not just in deaths and injuries , but the woods coming down (for timber) and the beginning of mechanisation.
