    Yet again refs screw themselves

All over SSN today about jarvis not going down after being clipped in the penalty area.It was a clear trip but he attempted to stay on his feet, and therefore the ref didn't give it. They cannot complain about 'simulation' making there jobs harder when they only ever give penalties for fouls when a player embellishes things.

Aaargh it make my blood boil

Fair point but isn't this a symptom if the plastic community these days that demands controversy from nothing yet will shy away from there not being a grey area!

Football seems to run now on sensationalism and not the old bread and butter!

Maybe (SSN needs to have something to talk about all day) but this is my personal pet hate (well that and woman screaming during dramatic moments at games :/ :/ ). It seems refs are intent on coaxing cheating out of footballers and then complaining about it. If they just officiated properly then they would make there own lives so much easier.

re: Yet again refs screw themselves

I'm going to be in a minority here, but the slander and expectations put on referees these days is scandelous.

Nothing angers me more than hearing Hansen / Shearer etc bleating on about how a referee made a "good" or "bad" decision. If he make a mistake, he makes a wrong decision, not a bad one, which most people still can't agree on after watching 20 replays. Get off the guys back.

This thread subject (nothing directed at the OP)is an example of how impossible their job is. Not only do they have to decide if a foul is committed, but they have to make a judgement on whether they are being conned as well. This is all in a split second, where it's not possible to see everything that happens from every angle. The bloke gets one look to base his decision on, and players are so accomplished at simulation (cheating) its nigh on impossible for it to be clear what happened.

It's one thing to call a ref whilst in the stands, but there seems to be a contant media induced witch hunt which is

I totally get that Adi, they recieve a lot of criticism and have to deal with players trying to con them. But this is why incidents like this anger me, as they seem to be actively encouraging players to con them. The message i got from the jarvis foul is if you try to play fair you won't get awarded penalties that you should, so take a swan dive.

In my opinion I think refs do a good job.

Managers blame them to cover for poor performances from their players and pundits are too scared of agreeing with an official.

How many times has a player missed a sitter or a defender missed a header that has lead to a goal but because the ref gave a contensious penalty then thats the reason the team lost.

I would like to see, for one game only, a ref with a headcam so we can see what they see, eliminate the 17 different angles that TV gets.

As regards to simulation/diving, then yes its hard for referees to spot what is a dive and what is a fair tackle, again taking TV, how many times have they had to use super slo-mo and zoom to show that a player got faintly clipped...all things a human referee doesn't have.

In principle I agree refs do have a difficult job - but there are occasionally wrong decisions that are bad decisions! The trouble is the laws of the game leave little flexibility once decisions are made and as a result sometimes mistakes are compounded.

Take Chris Martin getting sent off at Burnley and look at all of the implications

    1. Martin gets a yellow card for slipping over and immediately the whistle is blown (wrong decision)
    2. This leads to Derby unfairly being down to ten men in a high profile top of the table clash
    3. The ball ended up in the net after Martin's slip in the same phase of play (which would have meant it was 1-1 and 11 v 11 at the point where Martin was sent off)
    4. The game was unfairly ended as a contest by this wrong decision on the day leaving us 5 points behind Burnley when it could have been closer

4 1/2 - The Burnley fans en masse show themselves to be a completely classless bunch who consider the decision correct because Martin has a reputation rega
