    Hard Men!

Another great photo piece from the Daily Mail [yuch spit!] My favorite pic is the "Chopper Harris" one, he looks like he has literally murdered Stan Bowles.

Some players on there I had forgotten and one that should not be included, Roy Keane, gutless worm. - view external link

Here's one Woody - John McGrath

His general approach to a game was to disable the opposing players
I was at a Wolves-Southampton game (late '60s/early'70s) when he was continually clogging the Wolves attackers. Jim McCalliog solved the situation - I had a grandstand view from the North Bank. Wolves had a corner and McCalliog went up with McGrath and made no attempt to head the ball as he put all his concentration into elbowing McGrath in the face. Result - McGrath off injured and a Wolves win

    Two more with Wolves connections:-

Eddie Clamp scores one of nine against Fulham on 16 September 1959:-

..and former manager Tommy Docherty in his Arsenal days:-

Eddie Clamp, now he was a hard man! Born in Coalville I believe and told by a teacher to get a shave. He was nine at the time! I often use to pass him on my bike as he ran up the Waterloo Road, before a match to the ground .

Having said that, Eddie could play as well and his England caps proved that. The Wolves half back line, as it was called back then, was also the England half back line, on many occasions.

Abbo', mate, you're spot on there. I think Clamp, Wright and Slater provided England's half-back line in one or two games in the '58
    World Cup.
During the '50's Wolves supplied a heap of England players. Wright, Flowers, Slater, Clamp, Mullen, Wilshaw, Broadbent are some that come to mind, there may have been others. For the Wolves, that was a memorable era. Still, all good things come to an end they say, but never mind that, we're on the march again...lookout world

Tunds'...Kevin Muscat, Never one to shy away from a tackle !!!! Jeez, mate, you put that mildly. . I don't like to say this about a former Wolf, but Muscat was over the top. He made 'Thuggy'Barton look like a Sunday School teacher !!! Frankly, I'm surprised he didn't receive even more suspensions than those he acquired while he was in England. Fearless, perhaps, but also bluddy reckless. He returned to finish his career here in Oz, but he hadn't changed much. Sadly, I don't think his type are good role-models for young lads who want to play the beautiful game. That's my view for what it's worth.
