Why did FF start 'Only the Best Posters can have Avatars'?

I have already asked this question on FF but nobody seems to know the answer.
I certainly missed the announcement.

Really the title should read FM (FootyMad) rather than FF. I have no idea who made the decisions but all over the Boards you can see that many have had their avatars removed. There is clearly method behind this process, and clearly you and I (we both have avatars) are of the better standard, as is the Chief for example. Whereas the more rough end of the stick, e.g. Pents, have had their avatar removed. Someone had a difficult task making the Fiddler/Weasel decision but fair enough I accept the result.
Be interesting to see if it all breaks down into warring camps.

I think it's to do with the 'upgrade'?

I tried to change my avatar a while back but it wouldn't let me, then it wouldn't let me upload my old one either so now I'm left without one at all.

It's the downgrades fault.

Avatarians see it as an upgrade.
Lesser posters look for excuses and call it a downgrade.

People who delete their avatars are clearly unstable and qualify as 'iffy' posters.

Well, I managed to easily upload one to FF...!

but then they deleted it!! How petty can you get!

(I have well over 1000 posts across the various forums. I thought to be allowed an avatar you only needed 250?)
