Comparison with 2006/07 Play Off Winning Side

When MoP posted a replay of our peno win over soton back in 07, it got me thinking are we a better side now than the one that one the play offs that year? the squad was as follows on that faithful day:

    GK Stephen Bywater
    RB Tyrone Mears
    CB Dean Lea****
    CB Darren Moore
    LB James McEveley
    RM Craig Fagan
    CM Matt Oakley
    CM Seth Johnson
    LM Stephen Pearson
    CF Steve Howard
    CF Paul Peschisolido Booked

    Substitutes:
    GK Lee Camp
    DF Marc Edworthy
    MF David Jones Booked
    MF Giles Barnes
    FW Jon Macken

Looking at that starting 11, the only player I'd take in exchange is lea**** who had an incredible season that year in place of Keogh. apart from that you could make an argument for mears. Oakley was a good player but not as good as what we have now.

bottom line, I believe our current team is miles better than what we had last time we won the play offs.

    thoughts?

Without a doubt, this years side is so much better than the 06/07 side, you only have to look at the players and where they went on to afterwards to see that. Other than David Jones who has just won promotion again, nobody else has really been successful.

Wouldn't mind betting that collectively that's the worst squad of players ever promoted, which was proven in the following season which everyone knows what happened.

If we go up and have a first choice 11 that's exactly the same as our first choice 11 right now, we'd get 25-30 points minimum, no question.

Will this year's squad celebrate a play-off win in Scream and buy me several pints off beer?

Only then will I judge them

Although not in the squad on the day, I would like to give a mention to Arturo Lupoli. He made a big contribution to that season. In terms of ability and attacking flair, of that team, only Lupoli and Barnes (if he could have sorted his attitude out!?!)would get anywhere near our first team now. Possibly Howard if we needed someone to give competition for Martin, although big Steve was not even a quarter of the footballer he is.

Barnes, Jones, who was and still is a quality championship player and Oakley who was just past his prime. lea**** as you say was rock solid that season, but then seemed to go dwon hill..as did most of them to be honest, whether it was promotion to the Prem that made them think they were better than they were or for that season they performed above their normal ability who knows.

But given the fact that many of our players are improving all the time, then there is every hope for next season.

(I refuse to mention the "P" word!)
