It's nearly upon us and I have to say this is probably the least optimistic I've ever felt before a World Cup, I might be excited about Saints players being in the team if they weren't almost certain to be leaving when it's all over.
So I thought it might be fun to start a thread to share your favourite, earliest or whatever memories of World Cups past.
For me Mexico 86 is the first one I remember fully I have vague memories of Spain 82 but was only 8.
One thing that sticks in the mind (apart from Linekers goals) was Ray Wilkins sending off v Morrocco for throwing the ball at the referee, it was so needless and even as a 12 year old I remember thinking "What the **** did you do that for!!??"
That's probably my earliest memory of that competition (STL) and about the only thing memorable about the game which ended 0-0. - view external link

I think Mexico 86 was the one with Mike Channon and Cloughie as the TV pundits.
He kept saying how good line-acre was and Cloughie kept arguing with him about anything.
I would have to go with 1990, Roger Milla had some moves.
It was indeed !! "The boy line-acre done good" !!Originally Posted by Rockthecasbah

Not a favourite but one of the most memorable apart from 1966 is "The Battle of Santiago", Chile v Italy 1962.
Now that was violent.
1966, for obvious reasons and because it was the first (and last) time I feigned injury to get out of a cricket match.
I was due to play my 2nd game for Southampton school boys, in Bristol I think, but decided football was more important.
That was the first time I watched an important England game in the pub. Had just turned 18 and it was quite a new experience. I remember drawing England's second substitute in the first goalscorer sweepstake, thinking I had no chance, then thinking I'd won, then finding out he was our first sub. Doh!! Didn't really care as pub went wild.Originally Posted by Pentridge
And for a non England memory I remember celebrating that Letchkov header in 1994 like he was one of our own.
My earliest memory is the 2002 World Cup Finals when England played Nigeria, Argentina, Denmark & Brazil (can't remember who else)? I specifically remember watching the final between Germany & Brazil with Ronaldos 2 goals & famous haircut.
Being English I don't have a favourite memory tbh, maybe when Spain won it in 2010 as I have a soft spot for Spain, love the football they play!
