    Rooney!

Time to drop him. IMO hes nether an international or a talisman. He's in there only because of his links as the youngest of the golden generation!

Out of position or not he never does it on the big stage picking most of his goals off against lesser qualification opposition.

Un the euros 2 years ago we had great team spirit and momentum and putting him back in at that point just broke that.

Time for him to be put out to pasture and give the new silver generation time to grow.

    re: Rooney!

rooney's in the team because he's got that ability to produce something out of nothing. the trouble is he doesn't do it often enough!

maybe he's become complacent over time because his place in the side has never been in doubt? (until now).

in fairness to him, the cross for sturridges goal was world class.

he desperately needs one of those blockbuster performances to silence his critics.

He needs more than one! He needs a complete tournement. At the rate hes going it will be over in two games and there are a number of other players who could have played in a number of world class crosses from the left!

Was the same old story of so many other players like Hoddle and Barnes just never produced on the big stage!

Even Messi look ordinary last night for 70 minutes but in the 20 he didnt he did more than I've ever seen Rooney do in a major tournement.

He's either got to be played down the middle or left out of the side - you can see him getting increasingly frustrated playing wide - and that doesn't help him or the team...

I really hoped he might do something this WC, it looks increasingly unlikely given he was played out of position and only had 1 contribution of note and went on to miss a sitter. His personality does seem the sort to want to prove everyone wrong so hopefully he goes on to do that.

But does his record and form dictate he is deserving of playing their!

No not treally IMO there are other players more able and deserving without all the hullaballu about them.

I think hes only there for sentimental reasons! Argeintina left Tevez and USA left Donovan amongst others. Why not us?

having said all this I think they problem lies at the door of the institution right from the top. Time to break the Status Quo!

    He just frustrates me.

Can't remember the last time he tried something unexpected or outrageous for England. When he came into the national team he it was like Barkley is seen now, exciting, able to beat a man, try something dif. Now he just plays as a bustling striker. Too predictable and staid. I think he could do with a year off. Regain his mojo. He def has the ability, it's just like he's mental knackered all the time.

When will England stop trying to put square pegs in round holes... I don't give a toss how good people think Rooney is, we can't just keep playing him in the forlorn hope he will come up with a decent game.. He want's to play the 9 or 10 role but he simple is not our best 9 or 10... Okay bench then in case of injuries or tactical changes during the game.

    re: Rooney!

You forgetting Euro 2004 Rat, Rooney was awesome there until he got injured but in the 10yrs since has rarely hit those heights.

Shearer has called it right saying he plays the number 10 role or not at all. Rooneys game is based on making things happen not tracking back to cover his LB.

Against Uruguay and Costa Rica we should go 2 up (Rooney & Sturridge) and move Sterling to the left wing. Neither of these sides has a Pirlo that totally dictates the game. Juventus just handed him a 2yr extension to his contract at 35, he was awesome again... Joe Hart ran past his free kick

No I've not forgotten at all. I saw him play as a youngster and his hunger made up for anything he may have lacked. Now hes older his done well but not hit the potential he had on the international stage! At club level donw very well.

Fact is like Angry says I dont think hes one of our best. Hes a household from legacy not from what hes done!

Remember Toto Schillaci and what he did in 1990 ... didnt make him a great international tho did it!
