    souness,s opinion on liverpool.

said a couple of weeks back that the liverpool side he played in was the best club side ever at the quick pass and move game.

then he said apart from barcelonas recent side.

i actually agree with him except the bit about barcelona, i think liverpools great teams were better than barca at pass and move in the bigger games. barcas tippy tappy football sometimes didnt work at the business end of the cl, and liverpool were a much better counter attacking team.

    any thoughts.

Obvious point is that the Champions league is far harder to win than the European cup was. I would say that the top twenty teams in Europe at the moment would all blow the 80s Liverpool out of the water (given time machine in order to play the match)

the champions league might appear harder to win but the big teams often get a 2nd chance when they lose a couple of games, in the old style european cup, if you lost just one game you were facing elimination if you didnt win the next game.

an example was real madrid in 2000 who loast 3 games in 4 to bayern munich and conceded 10 goals in the process won the tournament.

the old style european cup offered little 2nd chance.

By that logic a cup should be harder to win than the league because a team can lose several games in the league and still win the title but they have to win every game they play to win a cup.

    Is that what you believe?

The great Liverpool side was 30 odd years ago. Football is so much faster and the game has changed so much that it's harder to compare over a period of more than a decade. That's the reason I don't like comparing teams of different eras. But I see where The Lord is coming form on this one.

    youve contradicted yourself.

if you can lose more games in the league than in the cup in order to win it then that suggests the league is easier to win.

statistically big teams win more leagues than cups anyway.cos the long haul tournys are more difficult for the underdog.

So which is it? Leagues are harder to win or cups?

A national cup competition is easier to win.

By Rev's logic a cup is harder to win as the big teams do not get a second chance if they have an off day.

Not for the first time rev is talking nonsense, the champions league in its present format is a far more difficult competition that the European Cup ever was simply due to the fact that there are more teams from the elite leagues in the competition and so fewer lesser teams from the so called diddy leagues graduate to the latter stages.
The fact that the bigger teams can avail themselves of this "second chance", as he sees it, makes it a more difficult competition to win rather than making it easier.

if you have the spending power leagues are easier to win.

if your the underdog, cups are easier.
